So the “Civil War” ended the year before and the people of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, erected a monument to the fallen. Note how they called it the “War of the Rebellion,” not the more neutral “Civil War” or the ambivalent “War Between the States.” They knew what it was: a slaveholders’ rebellion.
