Aquatic Ecologist by profession. But this is a private account, though I post aquatic things know and then.
Poor picture with my mobile phone, but a proof we have seen Polyommatus humedasae, one of the rarest European butterflies occurring exclusively on a 13 ha spot in Valle d'Aosta.
One of the most impressive plants in Gran Paradiso is Astragalus alopecurus. And Decticus verrucivorus (though also abundant elswhere) is always impressive.
Back in Gran Paradiso after 13 years. Still one of the greatest National Parks in the Alps. But unbelievably dry and not much left of the glaciers.
I do not have a camera, but even with a mobile phone it is simple to take a picture of these 5 long-eared owls in my neighbours garden. (The top one is adult, the others juvenile.)
Have used the holidays wisely (but enough dead wood remained in the forest).
A bit less wind, a bit more solar than in 2024, but also in 2025 61% of the electricity generated in Germany stems from renewable sources. Strong increase over the next years to be expected, given that alone 30GW of windpower have been permitted and granted financing in recent auctions.
Third year in a row that the neighbours and I brew our own beer. Different receipe in 2025, targeting "Helles" instead of "Pils".
And we can now also align species richness to combinations of stressors (Fig 4):
We observed consistent relation with salinity, oxygen depletion, and fine sediment accumulation, while the relation with nutrient enrichment and warming varied among groups. The results allow us, amongst others, to predict how species richness changes with increasing stressors intensity (Fig. 3):
We extracted data on 1,332 stressor–response relationships from literature and ran Generalised Linear Mixed Models for each dataset individually. With the resulting estimates (e.g. regression coefficients) we performed a Bayesian meta-analysis. In short, these are the results:
Retreat of our working group in the new field station of Cologne University in Bienen.
Es gibt auch noch Lackpoliturmilch, Bitumenmilch, Farbenmilch, Wolfsmilch, Milchglas, Zementmilch und Waschmilch.
Field trip to the Scheld flooplain restoration during a BioAgora workshop.

Conference dinner of this year's meeting of the German Limnological Society in the Senckenberg Natural History Museum.
Great PhD defense by Andrea Schneider today. Biodiversity effects of modified grassland maintenance on dykes in urban areas. @merlin-project.bsky.social @valentinecology.bsky.social
One of the most fascinating popular science books I have ever read. History of Europe from the decline of the dinosaurs to the rise of humans.
40+ years ago, I spent much time with placing and controlling nesting boxes for boreal owls (Aegolius funereus) in a mountain range in Germany (Ebbegebirge). Today I found one that survived, though the forest has since long died of drought and the owls disappeared.
Downstream of the alpine #glaciers you find some of the most impressive braided river sections. I wonder what will happen to them in 50 years when the glaciers have melted. Most likely some sort of (boring) floodplain forest.
Yesterday, we observed 42 butterfly species, nice ones like Parnassius apollo and Limenitis reducta, but also rarities like Hipparchia geneva and Muschampia lavatherae.
Since 15 years we search for Eryngium alpinum. Today we found a few.
