Bought this randomly at a good price without knowing what it was, figured it was a recent reprint cobbled together from random tracks, but it’s actually a jazz fusion sampler from Columbia Records in the early 70s and it rocks. Mingus, Ornette, Jarrett, Weather Report and so much more funky stuff.
I heard this album at an impressionable age thanks to being way into the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, who were on the same label.
Morning listening. PM Dawn is a very underrated act these days even though I hear their influence and dreamy hip-hop sound everywhere now. They even had a #1 hit and 2 other top 10s but they were also treated as a sort of hippie punching bag in the boom-bap 90s. They deserve some reevaluation.
Always hated these 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection compilations. They look terrible (why gray?), have perfunctory track lists with the occasional poorly-chosen live swap-out, and just plain have no gravitas. I guess they were cheaper than better compilations? I’d say splurge instead.
Bought this 3-CD set back in college when I was taking an introduction to electronic music class and learned about all the academic nerds that made the first beeps & boops with synthesizers that took up entire rooms. Took me a bit to wrap my ears around some of this but greatly expanded my horizons.
This blank CD must be over 25 years old at this point, and it still plays fine. Can still feel where my brain got rewired listening to this in my friend’s car all those years ago.

Barro's tweet made me think about this Crunchy Cons origin story, which I think also captures the way a certain type of conservative will just shun things they might otherwise enjoy if they think it will make them look bad to other conservatives.
This is the top 20 from the year-end Billboard Hot 100 list for 1974. I doubt anyone on any side of the poptimism debates would say music from 1974 sucked. Does this list effectively spotlight 1974's greatness? It probably sucked repeatedly hearing the bad songs when you didn't want to.
I love the fonts, colors, and design of those greatest hits albums from A&M Records in the 1960s. Sure, the music they had inside could be a bit fuddy-duddy sometimes, but it was also all relentlessly pleasant. Herb Alpert’s pop jazz stylings make me feel like I am on game show while on vacation.
Slowly Type O Negative is getting more critical recognition; there was a Pitchfork Sunday Review of Bloody Kisses a few years back. But October Rust was always my favorite of theirs, a totally unique goth metal record that a lot more music dorks would love if they knew it was in their wheelhouse.
