National headquarters of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War have issued an Order of Mourning in memory of Brother William Pool.
Times like these remind us that we aren’t as far removed from the Civil War as it sometimes feels. RIP Brother Pool.
The last surviving son of a Union veteran, William Pool of Bolivar, MO passed away yesterday at the age of 101. Mr. Pool’s father was Charles Parker Pool who served with the 6th West Virginia Cavalry. Bill was himself a WWII veteran.

Today in 1862 was the Battle of Pea Ridge. This Union victory effectively secured control of Missouri for the Union. I visited the beautiful National Military Park in 2023. Always strikes me how Civil War battlefields—once the scenes of horrific carnage— are now some of our most beautiful landscapes
