A pied-billed grebe from a couple days back at Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside, CA. So nice to be back in SoCal! 🪶🌿
Nice little trail, knocked out 2.5 miles, had some gorgeous views of a soaring northern harrier, and got my lifer California gnatcatcher! 🪶🌿
Look at this beautiful western rattler at San Elijo Lagoon! Very chill, didn’t even rattle as I stepped over 🐍 on our return trip on this out-and-back trail it’d shifted a bit so we could see its size a bit better, and it was a decent chunker! 🌿 #herps
Fieldwork w/ a side of birding! 16 species 🪶🌿 got a fun bald eagle low flyover, & great osprey views & vocals! The water level is low right now due to drawdown for dam removal & river restoration. The buoy on the right is an acoustic deployment monitoring biological responses to removal! 🧪🔊
Returned yesterday from the 10th offshore fieldwork trip of my PhD so far! 🦑🧪 Celebrating with an impromptu trip back home to SoCal to spend next week with my family 😌 red-shouldered hawk pics surely coming soon! 🪶 but first, one final evening excursion for some last-minute river fieldwork!

8 hours of pelagic birding in the offshore waters of New Hampshire/Maine/Massachusetts today! 43 bird species, including 3 lifers 🥧🪶 the highlight was a thick-billed murre (pictured), only the 3rd June record for NH! Other pictured: northern fulmar, great shearwater, and red-necked phalarope 🦑🌿
Wrapped up with another 4 miles this evening at a spot near UNH campus and got 2 more lifers! 🥧🪶🤩

Just returning from a weekend trip to Chicago for a wedding, and I had the joy of spending 3 hrs at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary! I saw 47 bird species, 9 of which were lifers 🪶🌿🤩 pictured: my lifer Wilson’s warbler 🥧
Sometimes birding is a planned excursion. Sometimes it’s walking out your front door and finding a huge pileated woodpecker standing right there destroying a tree stump 🪶🌿
A highlight from Parker River NWR, Massachusetts today: the purple martins are back in town! 🪶🌿
30 seconds into my 1st visit to my favorite local trail since it thawed, and I stumble across this beauty! 🦊 also saw warblers galore and the return of our friendly wood ducks, spring is upon us friends! 🪶🌿
More boat birds! 🪶🌿 pictured: savannah sparrow and palm warbler that stopped to rest on our vessel, horned grebe and brant seen in the waters of the harbor upon our return.
Also SO MANY osprey nesting on buoys in Hog Island Channel on our way back in! 🪶🌿
Never thought l'd take my best northern flicker photo ever offshore on the deck of a vessel! 🪶🌿 We've had some interesting bird visitors, mostly migrators likely enjoying a platform to rest on mid-journey. Highlights included a palm warbler, a savannah sparrow, and a ruby-crowned kinglet.
Another northern fulmar shot from my pelagic photos 🪶🌿 today’s inshore birding species included lots of common loons, turkey vultures, and black guillemots.
