Apropos of nothing, I once stayed in an odd little hotel in the Netherlands, with record players and LP's in every room, and for the evil I have done in my life I was faced with this:
They were only a few thousand miles away; try looking at a 12 inch globe with your eye six inches away. You can't see as far "around" the globe as you can from a greater distance. Perspective! (Pics from astrokatie.com thread.)
