Perfect. I'm now experimenting with suitably "moody" photos of me as the troubled artist in his studio. This is far too bright and shiny. Needs to be black and white, grainy & with boosted contrast.

Use of tethered mahl-stick as a stand-off to stop smudging. A stick is tied at the top & I hold the other end in my non-drawing hand sometimes hooking my pinkie round it. This “fixes” the other hand in postion. I’m ambidextrous so if I want lines sloping top left to bottom right I swap over.

Lev Tchistovsky once more. The model for this painting looks an awful lot like the notably callipygian Emma Dupont, Jean-Leon Gérôme’s favourite model, but I think she was dead by the time this was painted so I think Tchistovsky may have copied a Gérôme. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Du...
Lev Tchistovsky (1902-1969) Lev Tschistovsky was a Russian figurative painter. He trained at the Fine Art School in Saint-Petersbourg, where he was a pupil of Savinsky and Eberling. Laureate of his school, he left USSR in 1925 and took classes at the Fine Arts School in Rome and after in Florence.
Excellent weekend spent at the lovely Radical Bakers Gathering where we met up with old friends, made new ones, ate excellent vegetarian & organic food, and did lots of workshops on green wood-working, spoon carving, basketry, hay box cooking, making natural pigments, & foraging.
