The Pool.
Whatever would lure a leader
To organize a motorcade
To drive down the middle
Of a helpless, drained pool?
Water is indeed heavy
With great distributed weight,
But driving heavy
20,000-pound armoured vehicles,
Concentrating great weight
In a single line,
Possibly demonstrates
A lack of judgement.
Should a leader govern by impulse
Or rather with rational empiricism?
Perhaps that is why we are,
Where we are.

The Ubiquitous Tick.
How many times have you completed a hike
And found a tick crawling up your leg,
Or worse, one that is burrowing in a fold of skin?
Evolution has created an effective blood-sucking traveler.
I grew up with ticks as a Nature Boy in Massachusetts.
I have occasionally been attached to my little friends
During my 48 years of fieldwork in California.
The young tick hatches and crawls up a grass stem.
The tick quickly transfers itself from bloodless grass,
To a delicious bird, reptile, or mammalian blood donor.
Because of Climate Change and a warming planet,
Disease vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks
Are moving ever-northward into new hunting grounds.
Malaria-carrying mosquitoes are now in high-altitude Nairobi
And ticks with several diseases are moving into Canada.
Their vector-mode of transport is often whitetailed
And mule deer and white-footed mice (Peromyscus).
One major unfolding problem is the black-legged tick (Ixodes)
Which transmits Lyme disease to humans in both the East and West.
The Culex mosquito spreads the West Nile Virus worldwide.
The aggressive Lone Star Tick spreads alpha-gal syndrome,
A serious allergy to red meat (and dairy),
by transmitting a sugar molecule from the bite that causes this.
In our changing climate, there will be many challenges to face.
Regarding ticks, several proactive preventatives exist:
Dress for protection, use repellents, and always conduct tick checks.
Be careful and good luck.

Our National Reflecting Pool.
Our beautiful national reflecting pool;
Why. suddenly so green with algae?
Our 'One-in-Charge' claims great pool knowledge.
But a shallow body of water needs flow.
To paint it a 'patriotic-deep-flag-blue,'
Acts as a solar cooker and algae love warmth.
To leave supply pipes dormant for eight weeks
And then, unflushed, to suddenly turn them back on,
Gushes out a breeding-ground's-worth of algae.
Of course there are normal populations
Of visiting ducks and geese producing their waste.
But it's that 'solar-cooker-blue' that clinches 'the deal.'
Also, by adding so much H2O2, algecide, perhaps
The sealer (bonding) is breaking loose? Or it might be
Hydrostatic pressure coming from beneath?
How many more half-witted deals must we finance and endure,
Besides wars and such?

The Misled Missile.
A misled missile took 168 innocent lives.
Of all things, a girls' school wrongly mapped.
How tragic and unnecessary.
Now 168 pink backpacks are held up in the air
To protest this thoughtlessness and loss.
These young women never to mature,
Never to make others happy,
Never to have their babies,
Never to be part of the workforce,
Never to simply cook a nice meal.
The school building is broken.
The bodies are broken.
Our hearts are broken

Now we have a president who started by paving
The Kennedy Rose Garden with tiles, building to a crescendo,
Continuing with the destruction of the East Wing
To build a still-potential ballroom.
This ballroom project was not authorized by Congress,
Commencing with cryptic speed to establish an illegal entity.
For our 250th anniversary the president has gone one giant step further.
A huge, monstrous construction quickly appeared on the White House lawn.
It was a 5000-seat octagon cage stadium, overwhelming the surroundings.
Must our country's anniversary be highlighted by violent staged fighting?
Many changes have occurred around the White House property,
But this one may be unspeakably, just absolutely too much.
The quotes are: ". . .something . . . that's quite attractive to a lot of people."
"It's going to have the big UFC fight on June 14."
"And I'm looking at it, and maybe we'll never ever take it down."
Trump has ruined the beautiful White House grounds by building a 5000 seat cage stadium for a mixed martial arts cage fight. Photos of the stadium and of the Eiffel Tower, because Trump has no plans to remove the structure.

Jerome Powell was presented with the 2026 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award at the JFK Presidential Library in Boston today, recognized by the Kennedy family foundation for refusing to bend the Federal Reserve to Donald Trump's political will. Honored are those that demonstrate moral courage.

The Kennedy family just gave Jerome Powell their highest honor for standing up to Trump. Powell refused every threat, every attack, and every attempt to politicize the federal reserve. That's what courage looks like. Picture of Jerome Powell as he accepted the award in the rain.

The Struggling Polar Bear.
Polar Bears wander in a warming autumn.
No food intake all summer.
Seals in iceless water taunt the white giants.
Males fight with restless anger alone--
No females present to raise their testosterone--
Only tension, no ice from which to hunt,
And a longer hiatus with no food.

As the earth increasingly warms each year,
The bears must seek out cliff nests for eggs.
The Snowshoe Hare is still in a white mode,
Maintaining its lingering white phase,
While traversing on a brown substrate.
Easy to see but far too quick for the bear.
Balancing on cliff edges, seabird eggs
Are a small nutritional substitute.
Our human activities, releasing ever more CO2,
Have a great bear
Balancing on cliffs to ferret out a diminutive bird's egg.

The Ukraine Enigma.
Territory gained and possessed, and its history created:
This is the story of human movement and settling.
It has occurred thousands of times throughout history.
It has occurred many times in our own history,
As this country grew and needed 'more elbow room.'

We are now all living through Russia's present effort
To reclaim an area removed from its 'possession,'
After its great empire and power were reduced.
Cruelty, destruction, and death are witnessed every day.
This highlights why in this, our modern, complicated world interactions,
We must choose between strong, knowledgeable negotiation
And needless slaughter of animals and our children.
Blanket efforts to violently repossess in our time are clearly wrong.
Strength and power are important and necessary,
But continual attempt at negotiation and mutual respect
Are the only long-lasting way, along with wise voting,
We might survive together--
Slowly growing out of our inevitable differences.

Timmy the Whale Has Died.
The benevolent actions of humans are astoundingly confusing.
Days of effort to free a young Humpback whale
From its confinement in the less saline Baltic Sea
Where it would die if left in these water conditions,
Compared to how cruelly we treat each other,
In interactions, including warfare!
The Humpback had mistakenly lost its way in the Baltic Sea.
The Germans took a liking to the youngster,
Named it Timmy (and Hope), and followed its progress.
It repeatedly became stranded on the Sea's coast.
Finally it was coaxed into a flooded barge,
Financed by two German millionaires,
Off Wismar and transported to the North Sea.
Sadly after two weeks it was found dead off a Danish island,
Called Anholt in the Kattegat, the strait
Between Denmark and Sweden.
Its identity was confirmed by a tracking device
Attached to its back.
Just why whales become disoriented and stranded
Is not fully understood.
Perhaps the increasing number of chaos-pounding engines
May at last be discovered as the cause.

Return to the Sixties?
The Constitution directs a census every ten years.
Now this is twisted into a gerrymander war, started by Texas.
Overall fair voting results by also fairly representing minorities.
It has now been crushed by this biased redistricting movement.
In addition to this, the high court has further crippled the Voting Rights Act.
Former slaves without representation
Are now citizens with much less participation:
As it appears, we have returned to the Civil Rights injustices of the Sixties.
