LISA: God…what? No…

LISA: I didn’t know Larry well, but it’s a small town. Everyone knows everyone.

LISA: He could be a prick, maybe someone tried to rob him and it went wrong.

3 - Jes leans forward, presses her attack and her beliefs. Lisa tried to downplay what Jes is saying.

JES: Went wrong? A robbery gone wrong gets you shot or stabbed.

JES: He was a message to someone. Any thoughts on that?

LISA: Not really.

3 - They sit face to face. The power dynamic is shifted. While Lisa is in state of flux and confusion due to seeing Larry’s corpse, Jes is energized by it. She knows she’s got an in and she is going to question Lisa aggressively to see if she can break her down.

JES: What the hell was that cabbie doing strung up like some fucked up Christmas ornament?

LISA: Oh, Larry? He does that from time to time when he drinks too much…

JES: Be serious.

4 - Lisa grabs a salt shaker to fidget with during the conversation. She’s uncomfortable but trying to put up a nonchalant front.

LISA: How the hell would I know?

5 - Jes notices Lisa fidgeting.

JES: Hrm.

TOBE: How would you know? Have you tried?

5 - He turns back to Lisa.

MARTÍN: So sorry about that.

LISA: S’all good. Tobe actually didn’t forget this time. Can we have two more though?

1 - Lisa drops her Egg and Cheese in shock.

LISA: No…

2 - Close-up. It spills messily to the ground.

SFX: splat

3 - Smash cut to a close-up of a body being eviscerated in the basement of the church from when Lisa was there last. The knife used to cut the man open is a homemade dagger, the blade made out of an extremely dark wood of the tree above.

NOTE: We don’t necessarily need to see the basement in full at this time, but just note that the basement of the church will look a little different this time around. It’ll have a simple large rough cut slab stone altar that sits in front of the placenta-like roots of the dark tree above. Think of the roots of the tree as a sort of Tabernacle in a church. The rest of the cellar/basement is barebones. Basic wall sconces with candles line the walls to give the room dim lighting. The walls themselves are cobbled together stone and swamp mud, roots from vegetation above grow amongst it all. It’s damp and maybe even soggy due to the swamp. Whereas the EMFDMB basement is sort of a liminal space, this one should be full of character, something our low budget film adaptation wouldn’t have money to recreate.

Man: HURK

LISA (op): Ahhh!!

Our new horror/mystery comic, I JUST CAME FROM HELL #1 launches on Monday, July 13th! Take a peek at the first four pages and then follow the link below to sign up for our prelaunch!

1 - EXT. Wide shot. The entrance to Cebe’s Hand, a wild swampland in the Florida Panhandle. While not as wild as being inside Cebe’s Hand will be. There is still tons of foliage and greenery around. A deer drinks from a nearby bed of water. An alligator lies in wait.

JES (Off-Panel): June 6th, 2017.

JES (OP): Lisa Leung arrived in Devil’s Garden, Florida with her now deceased fiancé, Jonathan Johnson, to visit his estranged parents, William & Mary, also now deceased.

2 - The Alligator slowly and quietly swims up towards the deer, who unknowingly continues to drink.

JES (OP): What was supposed to be a day of reconciliation transformed into a night of horrors.

3 - Suddenly, the deer jerks its head up from drinking.

SFX: shf shf

JES (OP) A night where only Lisa would survive.

4 - …and darts away before the Alligator can strike.

JES (OP): Supposedly, a church fire would claim 33 souls that night. Their bodies have never been found.

JES (OP): But that doesn’t explain what happened next.

5 - Lisa, the noise that alerted the deer, walks down a dirt road, naked and bloodsoaked.

JES (OP): The following morning, as the sun’s light broke over the horizon…

JES (OP): …Lisa was seen stumbling, naked and bloodsoaked, down an old dirt road that leads from Cebe’s Hand, a tangled web of swampland that stretches across the Florida panhandle.

1 - Sheridan Porter, a white man in his late 50s with leather tan skin, drives a middle of the road pick up truck. Not new, but not a beater either. It’s well maintained despite its age. He had a quizzical look on his face as he tries to make sense of this figure he sees ahead.

JES (OP): Sheridan Porter, a Good Samaritan, who happened to be driving to his favorite fishing spot, was the first to find her.

2 - Wide shot of the truck pulling over as it nears Lisa.

JES (OP): When he noticed the state Lisa was in, he pulled to the side of the road to help.

3 - Sheridan exits his truck as Lisa passes him by.

JES (OP): As Sheridan approached, he could hear her talking to herself.

LISA (to herself): I don’t know. I don’t know. I took a leap of faith…

4 - Sheridan approaches Lisa who does not notice him at all.

JES (OP): If this all wasn’t strange enough, Lisa didn’t even notice him.

JES (OP): It was like she was somewhere else. Lost in her own mind.

LISA (to herself): This isn’t right. It shouldn’t be possible, but you’re still here.

5 - Lisa collapses into Sherdian’s arms.

JES (OP): Sheridan stopped her and asked for her name and she immediately collapsed in his arms.

SHERIDAN: Ma’am, are you okay? What happened to you?

6 - She weakly looks up at him. We can see both of them in this panel.

JES (OP): She looked at him, finally realizing where she was, and quietly uttered a single sentence.

7 - Extreme close-up on Lisa’s exhausted, bloodsoaked face.

JES (OP): M-my name is Lisa Johnson, and…

1 - INT. Airport. Upper 1/3rd shot of Jes. She and Jes stand on a moving walkway as it leisurely pushes them to their destination. Her hair is up in a messy bun (this will be her new hairdo for most of the book unless specifically stated), she looks tired. It’s been a long 8 months and she’s already feeling the sweltering humidity of Florida. We can’t quite see it yet, but Jes is 33 weeks pregnant with her and Dave’s baby. Gender unknown to either of them.

TEXT: June 4th, 2027.

JES: What do you think about that intro, Dave?

2 - Cut to Dave. Similar framing to Jes. Dave looks about the same as we last saw him, maybe his beard is a little longer. As usual, Dave plays bad cop.

DAVE: I think you’re getting ahead of yourself. Lisa hasn’t even agreed to meet with us yet.

JES: Jeeze, tell me what you really think.

DAVE: Okay…

3 - Pull back wide so we can see them both in full and how clearly pregnant Jes is. Dave holds onto the handles of both of their suitcases in front of them.

DAVE: I really wish you’d let me get you a wheelchair.

DAVE: You’re eight months pregnant, Jes. You should be resting.

4 - Jes, holding her stomach, with a faux eyes-closed, soft motherly smile.

JES: It’s Baby’s first mystery.

5 - She lifts her head up. Her sharp eyes open and her soft smile shifts to a wry one in classic Jes fashion.

JES: Plus, Lisa will find it hard to say no when she realizes that a woman who is eight months pregnant came to make a documentary about her.

6 - Dave tries to help Jes as the moving walkway ends.

JES: I got it. I got it.

DAVE: Things are about to change, Jes. You have to accept that.

The description of Scylla in The Odyssey is delightfully gruesome. Specifically her twelve legs “all writhing, dangling down.”

Scylla lurks inside it—the yelping horror, yelping, no louder than any suckling pup but she's a grisly monster, I assure you.
No one could look on her with any joy, not even a god who meets her face-to-face...
She has twelve legs, all writhing, dangling down and six long swaying necks, a hideous head on each, each head barbed with a triple row of fangs, thickset, packed tight-and armed to the hilt with black death!
Holed up in the cavern's bowels from her waist down she shoots out her heads, out of that terrifying pit, angling right from her nest, wildly sweeping the reefs for dolphins, dogfish or any bigger quarry she can drag from the thousands Amphitrite spawns in groaning seas.
No mariners yet can boast they've raced their ship past Scylla's lair without some mortal blow— with each of her six heads she snatches up a man from the dark-prowed craft and whisks him off.

1 - Back to Lisa, she exits a small bodega type store called Sunnyside Market that’s on the Main Street and near the gulf. It’s open early (or late depending on your view) and has her favorite breakfast sandwich.

LISA: Thanks again, Martín.

2 - She looks at the breakfast egg and cheese she’s about to devour.

LISA: Prepare yourself, Egg and Cheese.

LISA: In about two minutes you’re going to see the horrifying wonders of the human body first hand.

3 - As she takes her first bite, she hears a scream. She looks up from her sandwich while biting it.

LISA: Hmf?

4 - Up ahead toward the gulf, far down the street. She sees a small crowd forming. A handful of late nighters and early workers. Additionally, we see the two cop cars from the previous page already parked over there. Their lights flashing. Something (a human body) is hanging from a rig on the dock but it too far that we shouldn’t quite be able to make it out besides the shape.

First weekend on our monthlong 10 year wedding anniversary excursion to Key West was a success. I love this place so much.

1 - Jes sits on the edge of her bed in her hotel room watching TV. She’s already dressed for the day. Not much else to do when your unborn baby wakes you up at 3am. Dave has made it back and asleep in bed with what will be a moderate hangover.

LISA (Narration): Guess it’s gonna be one of those kind of days.

JES: You better not make it a habit of waking me up at 3 A.M., Bean…I’m not built for this…

JES: …And your father better not make coming home drunk in the middle of the night a habit either…

JES: You hear that, Dave? You’re doing double duty on my shit list.

DAVE: Hrm…

TV (Tim Ribbons): And, tell me if you heard this one before, on the third day, he rose again!
