Today I’m remembering South Carolina's Lion of the Senate: the late Ernest Hollings (D-SC). He fought in WWII against fascism, began his career as a segregationist, but by 1988 endorsed Jesse Jackson. He also said things to Republican colleagues like “I’ll take a drug test if you take an IQ test.” 😆

Senator Ernest F. Hollings, Democrat of SC is retiring, at 82, after 38 years in office. He is the last of a breed once prevalent in Congress: the quick-witted wielder of the folksy metaphor and aphorism. Last week, as it closed up shop, his office issued a collection of his best lines:

On stubbornness: "There's no education in the second kick of a mule.”

To opponents of government regulation: "Letting y'all regulate yourselves is like delivering lettuce by way of a rabbit.”

On his marriage: "People always wonder how Peatsy and I stay to- gether, with so many divorces around us. A friend of ours used to say, 'It's simple. They're both in love with the same fella.'" [During her husband's campaign for his party's presidential nomination in 1984, a reporter called their hotel room and asked to speak to Senator Hollings. Mrs. Hollings held the phone away from her mouth and said,
"Hey, mister, you Hollings?”|

Responding to a GOP challenger who dared him to take a drug test: "Til take a drug test if you take an I.Q. test."

While debating John Glenn, the former astronaut: "But what have you done in this world."

On President Bush's effort to distance himself from the Enron scandal:
"I did not have political relations with that man, Ken Lay."

On former Senator Phil Gramm's habit of hogging the spotlight:
"If you want a lesson in political anonymity, sponsor a bill with Phil Gramm."

On international trade: "We hear those in the national Congress running around and saying, 'Free trade, free trade, I am for free
trade,' when they know free trade is like dry water.T here is no such thing."

Anyone else watch the Gilgo Beach Killer doc and immediately notice that the serial killer has the same dead fish eyes that Miller has taken to covering up with sunglasses these days? Truly the window to the soul…or lack thereof.

First of all this is the best birthday request ever. Second of all, for me it’s Caroline Caldwell’s street art piece from (I believe?) the 90s. This particular shot of it in the NYC metro with the young woman foregrounded is my favorite.

Aren’t they all about “traditional marriage”? This is another DEEPLY unpopular thing to do. Pew polling back in March says of the 51% of Americans that support deporting “some” immigrants, only 5% would include those with U.S. citizen spouses. My guess is the numbers are even lower now.

It first shows that in overall 51% of Americans support deporting “some” undocumented immigrants (at that time 32% supported deporting all and 16 supported deporting none). Of that middle 51%, 97% supported deportation of ppl who had committed violent crimes, 52% for non-violent crimes and 44% for those who had arrived in the last 4 years.

When immigrants are rooted in their communities, the numbers go WAY down. Only 15% support deportation for those who have a job, only 14% for parents with children born in the U.S., 9% for undocumented people who came as children and only 5% of those who support deporting “some” undocumented immigrants would support deportation of someone married to a U.S. citizen.
