I have a fondness for the forgotten John Ford explanation of Klingons using genengineering to make soldiers perfectly adapted to ruling subject species. Probably for the best that strange new worlds doesn’t care to explain things one way or another.

Today on the looong train ride from Toronto to NYC, I finally finished Weaveworld by Clive Barker. I beautiful, sexy, horrifying fantasy novel about surviving a genocide and preserving the magic of one’s culture. It reminds me a lot of his movie Nightbreed as well as his more towering work Imajica.

Haven’t finished a book in a while though I’ve started several and reread others, but I finished Amongst Our Weapons after a long hiatus 80% of the way through. Decent book, although I prefer my wizards to make less healthy life choices

Relatable

Who were they all? Quentin had heard rumors about dog-and-pony shows like this before, gray-market cattle calls, work for hire, but he'd never seen one himself. He definitely never thought he'd go to one, not in a million years. He never thought it would come to that. Stuff like this was for people on the fringes of the magical world, people scrabbling to get in, or who'd lost their footing somehow and slipped out of the bright warm center of things, all the way out to the cold margins of the real world. All the way out to a strip mall in Hackensack in the rain. Things like this weren't for people like him.
Except now they were. It had come to that. He was one of them, these were his people. Six months ago he'd been a king in a magic land, another world, but that was all over. He'd been kicked out of Fillory, and he'd been kicked around a fair bit since then, and now he was just another striver, trying to scramble back in, up the slippery slope, back toward the light and the warmth.

An extremely cursed post that is made worse by the knowledge that it would look a lot like the isekai/portal fantasy story Tolkien wrote called The Lost Road, where a modern guy reads a book and wishes he knew what Numenor were like and ends up there shortly before it sinks into the ocean.

Some clarification on no green screens in PHM

Some clarification here: "no green screen" doesn't mean "no VEX".
There were, in fact, thousands of VFX shots in the film (2018!)
Green screen is sometimes used in lieu of building sets or figuring out locations/lighting in advance, which can be noticeable if not done carefully, and is something we didn't want to do. We built the entire interior of the Hail Mary ship - but within the ship, there were still wire and puppeteer removals and ceiling replacements, etc. When Ryan is outside on the hull of the ship, we shot him in front of a black background for space and a shifting hue background when he was up against the aurora of a planet which allowed for truer interactive light on him than a green screen would. The wide space exteriors and spaceship shots were entirely digital and beautifully done by ILM. Rocky was a seamless blend of puppetry and animation from Framestore. And other great work from many more. It really does take a village and we had the best of the best on our side.

It’s frustrating because this inability to write doesn’t come from the genre. If you go back far enough, there’s a better portal fantasy manga genre with works like Twelve Kingdoms and Escalflowne. I don’t know why the genre has been such a haven for slop. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en...

Tonight, I finished Ethan of Athos, another Vorkosigan adventure minus any Vorkosigan characters. Instead, the protagonist is a gay obstetrician from a planet devoid of women. He’s in search of ovarian tissue cultures so he can create the next generation of sons. Really good pulpy feminist sci-fi

I finished Barrayar, a sword and planet novel about the mother of the protagonist of the rest of the series. This was a fantastic sequel to the star trek-like Shards of Honor and it's rife with intrigue, sexist in-laws, and cloak and dagger heroics.
