@derykhouston
One man exhibitions in the former Soviet Union, Scotland, Iraq, Canada & the USA. My work was featured in the NFB documentary "From Baghdad to Peace Country", & is in the permanent collection of the Canadian War museum in Ottawa. www.derykhouston.com
The 9 Standards, as seen from across the valley below. If you look super carefully at the top ridge of the drawing you will see the tiny dots that show the nine standards on the ridge. It was a faster hike coming down! (Round trip of about four hours.)
This little book stand was converted from a clock I built for a play in Vancouver years ago. (The little bird would pop out on cue in a scene in the play). I set it up in our garden and a real bird built a nest inside where the white bird is. Nature is beautiful
"Cloud Bank" by Deryk Houston 24"X24" acrylic on canvas (deep stretcher bars and no frame required. $1,700.00 cdn plus taxes
"Light" by Deryk Houston 24"X36" acrylic on canvas (deep stretcher bars and no frame required. $2,100.00 cdn plus taxes
Reading my book while sitting in the garden.... and keeping an eye on the potatoes and leeks growing in the raised garden beds. (Photo taken by the acclaimed world photographer...Elizabeth😜 ). You have to look close....I'm down in the garden by the raised beds. I love our garden.
"Betelgeuse" by Deryk Houston. Acrylic on canvas. 11Feet wide X 17feet tall. (Could also be mounted horizontally.) Price: $20,000.00 plus taxes. Betelgeuse... is a massive, red supergiant star in the constellation Orion.
"Sun Coming Up" by Clifford and grandpa! Some of the best professional artist's works are when they can tap into the source of children's creative art. Clifford turned five years old in February. We love him to pieces.
My son Samuel and I have been working on a project in Kelowna. 35 birdhouses will hang from the forty foot ceiling in the centre lobby. Samuel's guitar building skills were invaluable. Three large ones will be hung on one line in the centre, with the smaller ones dancing around that centre core.
"Echoes From the Square" by Elizabeth Wellburn - Not long ago, this was a safe place". Then, the wind changed. (Sarajevo is the political, financial, social, and cultural centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a prominent centre of culture in the Balkans.) (Paintings by Deryk Houston.)
"The Mill" 24"X30" painted in 1975. Having some fun! My plan is to donate it to the Value Village in Victoria BC and see if someone will come along one day. It is one of my earliest pieces before I became a full time artist. I like the idea of "sparking joy" for someone.
"Fertile Saanich Fields" - some days are misty and the shadows are on the move. Some people like steady sunshine. I love seasons and the gifts offered through cycles of change.... but also the idea that they are predictable to a certain extent.
My audiobook is now available. It covers my journey as an artist growing up as a child on an idyllic farm, to entering the Ameriyah bomb shelter in Baghdad and discovering who we really are as human beings. Its for artists and collectors of my work & my family. Apple: books.apple.com/us/audiobook...
"Out for a stroll" by Deryk Houston. Hope this adds some sanity to your world. Think "Peace". Not steaks:)
My son, Samuel, and I completed this sculpture for a temporary setting in NanaimoBC., where it was set up for one year. It was then installed in the peace garden at Woodwynn Farms in central Saanich, BC. for a few years. It is now installed in a stunning private collection in central Saanich .
Art Works Gallery,Vancouver BC. "Cat on your Back" 36"X36" acrylic on canvas. $3,600.00 Group show on Saturday 22nd. This is one of my favorites. There are 71 years of life in this painting and it is classic Deryk Houston:) PS: My memoir, in audio book format, is very close to being completed.
I love orchards because they represent the seeds for the next generation. Our children and our grandson fill our hearts with joy every day. The world can be hard but there are also beautiful things when you look for them.
"Fertile Ground" 20" X 20" $1,700.00 The old farmers, who resisted change, had a fair point when they said, "You can't put two tractors in the barn and expect a new tractor." Art Works Gallery - Nov 22nd (Saturday) Group show with fellow artists. Hope to see you there.
Robin Hoods Bay, (Yorkshire), is a tiny village. The walk along the cliffs takes you past "Boggle Hole", on to Ravenscar, a large bluff off in the distance. Elizabeth's dad, Clifford, used to hunt rabbits in the fields beyond. Our grandson, Clifford, now walks the same fields.
As an artist, I'm searching for ways to bring out the magic of our west coast, by focusing on the history that is hiding in the shadows, and the immense scale. Art Works Gallery in Vancouver, Nov 22nd. Love to see everyone! Title: "Clouds are Going Away" 30" X 40" $4,200.00
Pen and ink.......... sometimes it's fun to just sketch, focusing on shadows and light. Elizabeth and I did a trip to Scotland and England recently and it was fun to sit and record the scene, taking in the landscape in a way you might not do otherwise.
'Point No Point" is one of the most beautiful, simple, small, romantic resorts on Vancouver Island. When you are lying in bed, you hear the sounds of the waves crashing down below on the shore. The cabins are cozy and rustic. There is the scent of wood smoke. Title: "Elizabeth at Point No Point".
"Muir Creek" by Deryk Houston 12"X12" acrylic on canvas. No frame needed as it is mounted on deep stretcher bars. ( $500.00 ) Art Works Gallery, Vancouver BC - Nov 22nd "Master Class" group show. Muir creek is just down the road from our home.

My labyrinth helped built a bridge to the surrounding community. My wife Elizabeth and I, feel the land is in good hands, and we hold onto the idea that first nations people are benefiting from the land which is once again acting as a therapeutic community.
I received a call from Wayne Sawchuk, an amazing human being & photographer, dedicated to preserving the Muskwa Kechika wilderness in the northeast of BC., Canada. I was ready to find a place where I could think straight & join a small group of other artists.
The little Iraqi boy was obviously in sad shape. I mixed up the plaster and took his little hand in mine, and was shocked at how hot his skin was. His mother’s face told me everything. Along with several other children's hand prints, his were incorporated into the sculptures surfaces as well.
Baghdad foundry: There were three rock like shapes representing family. You can see the steel rebar, that forms the rough shape. Paper is dipped in plaster. Then layers of plaster. Another tall section fits on top of the one in the foreground. (24 feet tall completed) Molds made and bronze cast.
I created this mother and child image on top of a mountain. Sense of scale? See the surrounding forest in the top right hand corner. The process was captured by the NFB documentary, "From Baghdad to Peace Country", which featured my work for peace. You can view it at www.nfb.ca/film/from_ba...
