We took a walk along the grounds and came across this sign. It reads “Perimeter Pools No Soap Please” I know what they mean but I said “No soap…” out loud waiting to hear “radio” in response when I saw the sign
This old time keeping device was in the lobby. One minute of googling got me close but I didn’t actually find this device
We spent last weekend at the Mt Washington Hotel home of the Bretton Woods conference. They’ve done a really nice job of renovating the hotel over the last decade
After that birthday celebration I’m moving onto some jazz fusion with Miles’s “Complete Jack Johnson” at disc 4 with a couple of takes of Ali and Nem um Talez
Next up in the continuing birthday celebration is Kidjo’s 1998 “Oremi” which includes her interpretation of Voodoo Child.
On vacation last week we saw fireworks over Kezar lake in Maine. They had some trouble with the barge from which they were launching. (Please don’t use water to put out a fire on a fireworks barge though. Yikes)
Celebrating Angelique Kidjo’s birthday by going way back to 1991 with Logozo. We saw her in 1996 at the Somerville Theater when she was still performing a bunch of these tunes (and we have seen her countless times since). Happy birthday!
Just got back from Antonio Sanchez, Edmar Castaneda, and Bela Fleck doing their BEAT trio at the #Mahaiwe. An amazing show. We heard them last year at #newportjazz and I think this set was better. It’s always a joy to hear great musicians both playing their hearts out and listening to each other

My phone lists African Sketchbook as 2007 (which is presumably the CD re-issue date). It’s actually 1969 (closer to what I was guessing when I said I’d go listen to it.
Tonight’s drink is the “Yesterday Today and Amaro”. I can’t remember with certainty but I think this is an Anders Erickson original. It’s 2 oz rye, 0.5 oz cynar, 1/4 oz Averna, 1/4 oz Benedictine, and 1/2 oz sweet vermouth. Yummy
I never knew what this thing was but for many years it sat, more or less as public art, at the intersection of 79th and Broadway in Manhattan
That’s some snow for a week into April here in Boston! (By the time I got to work it was more typical wintery mix)
Tonight’s #cocktail with @carlamiriam.bsky.social is the Champs Elysees from the Cocktail Codex. It’s a sidecar variant with cognac, green chartreuse, lemon juice, simple syrup, and angostura bitters. The balance isn’t quite right. Perhaps yellow chartreuse would be better: more like gin daisy
It’s guitarist Bill Frisell’s birthday. I’m going back to 2008 for his “History Mystery” with Ron Miles on cornet amongst a good band Is that cover photo from Coney Island? I’ve heard about incubators there that took care of premature babies but also were a money making public spectacle
Continuing on my Charles Lloyd birthday celebration with his 1996 Canto. This one features Bobo Stenson (p), Anders Jormin (b) and Billy Hart (d). This feels like one of the first #jazz albums I bought when it came out (along with Joshua Redman’s Spirit of the Moment). “Tales of Rumi”!
I missed the great tenor sax player, Charles Lloyd’s birthday yesterday. He’s 88! We’ve heard him 3-4 times over the years and he’s always amazing. I played Sangam remembering Zakir Hussain last week. Today I’m playing Mirror with Jason Moran (p), Reuben Rogers (b), and Eric Harland (d)

Yesterday was also Ornette Coleman’s birthday. He would have been 96. I’ve been listening to the two disc “Complete Science Fiction” with some beautiful tunes like Law Years and Street Woman. Coleman is known as a free jazz innovator but that doesn’t mean amelodic or unrehearsed. This is exquisite
