Rosemary Vey Jacqueline Hannah. Writer, historian (biographer of 3rd Marquess of Bute, mid to late Victorian currently interested in farming in 1860s East Ayrshire where I live), goat keeper. Cis, her/she. Bi. Married to @Chalcedonyvark.bsky.social
The last of the summer shows and a rare picture of me showing, Veena, who won champion kid today and on 1 August at Dumfries. She is very genuinely my kid as she was born premature and unable to stand and I fed her every two hours. She now feeds from her dam as well. She’s very gentle.
He’s perfect! My own Pangur Dhu had the worst start ever and no cat was ever more loved
Monksfield EmpressElvira stands confidently wearing her second place rosette at the Royal Highland Show last week. She has udder damage from an earlier mastitis infection which different judges evaluate differently. Both @chalcedonyvark.bsky.social and I are intensely proud of our home bred star.
“Their names are Ignorance and Want” The two great enemies, and we like to keep them around. All the same, we cannot afford the hideous creatures and we cannot let sympathy for the poor sods in whom they have fixed their claws affect our opposition.
I suspect that carping about rose species may be peak 🦋but, the ‘small white rose of Scotland is presumably the Burnett or Scotch rose, either single or double. Though the Old Yellow Scotch is the rose also clearly identified as Scottish.
Well that’s us done our duty. #DogsAtPollingStations #Greyhound
The white belly is, I think, a thing many kinds of primitive goats have. Here is Lillie.
Rebec had her first kids today. First kids on the holding this year. With little fat and very fine coats they are vulnerable to the sudden plunge of temperatures we have had. There is snow lying in patches outside, hence the heated box to warm up. They are dam reared. Clarsach (f) and Chanter (m).
In a move designed to greatly increase the range of colour and texture for producing rugs, I’ve crossbred some gimmers, and the odd yow with my new Icelandic tup. It’s resulted in a megaton of cute.
I’m not a man. I wasn’t drawing attention to my wife’s name because her employers are poisonous. And I’d like an apology, pretty please.
This is THE perfect plant for Valentine’s Day. Easy to grow, prolific, absolutely STUNNING, very reliable. Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso.
Salix gracilistyla 'Melanostachys, or it as bought as such. It’s a somewhat atypical presentation. It is however glorious and very gothic
I will tell my tame wethers Volodymyr and Seraphim of this, and ask them to spare a moment in their hectic schedules to honour a more local saint than their name-saints.
Yows (ewes) went to tups on Friday. Here are the girls put for cross breeding to my beautiful young Icelandic tup Raffles. I’m hoping do do more fiber work. #SmallFarmLife
Ten years ago I was in a new relationship with Sophie. It never occurred to me that by now one of my biggest worries would be that the colour of her skin would make her a target. Main-stream politicians talking about people like her creating ‘an island of strangers’.
We still suffer Orange marches, and occasionally there are ‘disturbances’ after football matches. And during the Troubles Glasgow was never bombed. Mind you the last time was exceptional circumstances.
Most of the time Sophie (my half Asian wife) and I live in our family and friends world. We have the usual ups and downs and worries of our small farm life, and our families lives. They are vivid and sometimes heartrending but patterns universal to human kind. People meet and love, quarrel, get ill.
So we have this rose bowl for a year, courtesy of the beauty of Monksfield Damaris, Penny’s kid, and our roses look rather fine in it, I think.
Well I hope they paid the excellent Val McDermid a shedload of dosh for mangling and sentimentalising her second Pirie novel.
While it’s vulgar to boast, Zoe got Reserve Champion Goat at Dumfries show yesterday and here she is with @chalcedonyvark.bsky.social. (Note for USA. In the UK red is first, blue is 2) #Goats #SmallFarmLife
Perfectly reasonable. I really hope the locals DO use loos. Oh wait, did the sub editor mean ‘dirty campers … ask to be allowed to use the locals’ loos’???? (I don’t mind ordinary bods getting English wrong. If you are paid to write it, try harder!)
It’s terribly hard to sleep through the kiss of life delivered by a loving and slightly worried collie. (Demi. Delphine loves her except when she forgets there’s a greyhound inside the bed and walks in her.)
