The helium here was formed by radioactive decay of underlying Precambrian granitic rocks and apparently trapped by an overlying gabbro intrusion. The folks who discovered this occurrence (disclosure, I know some of them) were drilling for Cu-Ni in that intrusion, named the Bald Eagle Intrusion.

Why were they drilling here? Likely following up a magnetic anomaly. (The basement here is covered with glacial and sometimes Paleozoic sediments). They found meters and meters of banded iron formation (BIF)! Probably not what they were hoping for. #geology ⚒️🧪

Here are some rocks! Core I was relogging the other day at NDGS library in Grand Forks; Precambrian basement of SE North Dakota. Drilled by New Jersey Zinc in 1964 as part of a mineral exploration program. (The other cores were drilled nearby in Minnesota and are in the core library in Hibbing.)

Decorators use 60 acres of corn, 12 colors in total. In addition to corn the Palace is covered with over 10 acres of rye, sour dock, and other native grasses."

MOSCOW (AP) - A severe earthquake struck a wide area of Soviet Central Asia today and caused "serious damage in a number of places," officials reported.
Ine three largest cities in the region — Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand - reported no casualties and virtually no damage, but communications were cut with the town of Gazli and some other small communities that received the brunt of the quake's force.
The earthquake, centered in the sparsely populated Kulzhuktau mountain range some 300 miles west of Tashkent, was much more powerful than the one which devastated parts of northern Italy early this month.
The Tass news agency said
"prompt measures are being taken to eliminate the aftermath of the quake and to give relief to the quake victims."
The jolt had a force of 9 on the 12-point Soviet Medvedev scale.
In Washington, the U.S.
Geological Survey reported the tremor reached 7,2
on the
open-ended Richter scale, which would be "several times bigger than the Italian earthquake in terms of energy." A quake with a reading of 7 on the Richter scale is capable of widespread, heavy damage.
The Italian quake, in which more than 900 are known dead,
registered between 6.5 and 6.9 on the Richter.

FAULTING PROCESS OF THE MAY 17, 1976 GAZLI, USSR EARTHQUAKE

ABSTRACT
The May 17, 1976 Gazli earthquake (m, = 6.2, Ms = 7.0) has both seismological and engineering importance. Waveform modeling of long-period IDA Rayleigh waves, and WWSSN long- and short-period body waves indicates a thrust mechanism with strike N40°E, dip 54°SE, and rake of 78°. The moment is estimated to be 1.6 × 102 dyne-cm; the fault area, 150 km°; the average dislocation, 3.3 meters; and the average stress drop, 200 bars. Strong directivity effects due to a propagating rupture are present in both the long- and short-period teleseismic P waves. The data are not adequately explained by a simple point source, and require a three-dimensional, finite-source model. The relative amplitudes of P and pP at both long and short periods are used to deduce that the rupture started at a depth of 15 km and propagated almost entirely unilaterally upward, with an average rupture velocity of 2.0 to 2.5 km/sec. Simultaneous deconvolution of long- and short-period P waves reveals a complex, azimuthally dependent, source-time function. Finite-source models further suggest that a major part of the faulting was concentrated at depth, below 7 km.
The strong-ground motion within 10 km of the fault is characterized by unusually high-amplitude (1300 cm/sec?), high-frequency (10 Hz) accelerations and low-amplitude (10 cm), low-frequency (0.8 Hz) displacements. Synthetic Wood-An-derson records computed from the accelerograms give a local magnitude, Mr, of
6.35. The duration and character of the strong-ground motion is consistent with a rupture propagating upward in the general direction of the station.
