It looks possibly as if the 'Slag's Place' which David Gladden was in in 1965 is a different piece to the one serialised as part of Picture Box.

I've been wondering for a while as to the identity of That Lad From Magical Mystery Tour Who Looks Like Zammo Off Grange Hill and thanks to this picture (courtesy of www.instagram.com/beatlesresea...) I now know it's someone called Michael Gladden.

CONFESSION: As a young Beatle fan in 1989, armed with only a few books about the band and Imagine: John Lennon on VHS, for a long time I (Marc) thought the shirtless man at 5:08 in the Give Peace A Chance scene was...George Martin.

MELODY MAKER: Tell us about Splinter signing to Dark Horse.
BOBBY PURVIS: We were delighted, of course. George is a really hands-on producer, which meant we got to record at his house, Friar Park – what a dream! We had our first session up there…must be about two years ago, working up some of the material we’d demo’d up to that point. At the end of the session we’re sitting around the mixing desk, listening back to what we’ve done so far. When the tape finishes George gives us a bit of a talking to – nothing terrible you know; we need more material and so on.
At the end of it all he says ‘You’ve heard a lot from me. Anything you don’t like?’ I don’t know what possessed me, but George was wearing this funny t-shirt that day, it was blue and it had a drawing of a tie printed on it. I don’t know what possessed me. I just blurted it out. ‘Yeah – I don’t like your tie’ There was a bit of a pause, then George just smiled and said ‘You won’t get very far in this business with an attitude like that.’
Bill asked him if he had any other advice for us and the rest of the session was just a stream of instructions. ‘Keep a good-natured working relationship with your producer.’ ‘Never wear clothes whose flamboyance might distract your bandmates.’ ‘If you get an electric shock from studio equipment, never make a member of studio staff get a shock from the same equipment just to prove it happened.’ Some of it was weirdly specific, looking back.

George Martin was absolutely furious. I suppose tempers were already frayed; it was cold in that church hall and obviously it had been a bit of a stressful night as, let’s be honest, The Beatles didn’t really have the training for that kind of operation.
EMI had called John earlier in the night and said the former comedy producer had been spotted in the area, and they just wanted the lads to apprehend and hold him until top brass arrived. So that’s what we did; once we nabbed Martin and got him into the church hall we kept him covered, and John put little George up a stepladder with a rifle.
Anyway, Martin was livid - acting very full of himself, criticising our uniforms and our Lewis Gun, asking us if there was anything we didn’t like.
Then little George did his tie joke.
This made George Martin even more furious. He whips out his little notepad, like ‘Your name will also go on the list. What is it?”
Naturally John wants to stick up for him and he’s quick as a flash “Don’t tell him, Harrison!”
John was an interesting character you know; he kind of liked being the leader, and it was him who’d got our group together, but in some ways Paul was more suited to it, more debonair, a bit smoother if you will. Often John would come up with a plan, or a chord sequence and Paul would just look a bit pained and ask him if he really thought that was wise.
Anyway, George Martin ended up turning the tables on us and was marching us through town with a bomb down my trousers. It’s lucky we bumped into Sir Joseph Lockwood or I don’t know what would have happened.

PETE BEST: At the end of it all he says to us ‘Is there anything you don’t like?’ There’s this pause then George comes back ‘Yeah – I don’t like your tie.’ We all thought this was pretty funny and I remember we started laughing but Joe did not like this – suddenly went into a rage. Never been talked to in this way. Who did we think we were? ‘Matchbox music’, whatever that is. I remember he was so cross he kicked the table and the teacups went flying. After a bit he calms down and says he’s prepared to overlook George’s remark and give us a chance. He’s got this tune for us, ‘Telstar’. So we go away and learn it then record it with him a few weeks later. We didn’t put a lot of effort into it to be honest as we thought our own stuff was better. That could be why it flopped, to be fair. So he dropped us. Not long after that Joe asks me if I want to sign on with him as a solo act – he thinks I’ve ‘got something’. So I signed. The others went back to playing the halls up in Liverpool – got one of their old drummers to take my place. I put out a string of discs over the next few years with Joe, and some of them did really well. When he died in 1967 I thought ‘I’ve had it’ but with a couple of contacts I’d made in the industry I got on the cabaret circuit and ended up pretty successful. Within a few years I was doing well enough to take on my own full-time backing band so I thought ‘Why not?’ and The Beatles became my group. I still let them do ‘Love Me Do’ once in a while, for old times’ sake.

BERT KAEMPFERT: After the session they came over to where the recording machine had been situated. I can still see them now, sitting around on those rickety chairs they always have in schools; Tony at the front, John and Paul behind him, George behind them and poor little Pete at the back. I gave them a bit of a talking to I must admit. I told them it was unprofessional to turn up to a recording session looking like you hadn’t slept, their drummer had been so unsure of himself I’d had to take half his kit away, and that instrumental of theirs hadn’t been up to much. At the end of it all I said ‘You’ve heard a lot from me. Is there anything you’re not happy with?’ George leaned round the side of John so he was looking me in the eye and said ‘Yes. I don’t like your tie.’ I thought this was a great joke and started to laugh but Tony glared at me and I stopped. Tony had…a reputation. Apparently in one fight he tied John Lennon’s legs in a knot. An actual knot.

SIR JOSEPH LOCKWOOD: Once George became head of Parlophone I saw much more of him. We had a weekly meeting in the diary and they were pretty much exclusively very happy, cordial occasions. Just one stands out in my memory as a time when I had cause to haul George over the coals somewhat. It must have been early summer 1962. June, probably. It was the silliest thing, really: each member of management had their own parking space outside the building. George’s was next to mine and he always parked his car in such a slapdash fashion, almost diagonally across the space, that when I arrived I sometimes couldn’t park in my own space. As you can imagine this started to become a bit of a bugbear for me. He started off the meeting with the usual stuff – he’d had some band in from Liverpool who he said were ‘very funny’, which I thought was a bit odd, he’d done a string arrangement for Matt Monroe’s new one, and so on. When finished talking the parking thing was still on my mind and I’m afraid I rather let him have it. ‘Inconsiderate, thoughtless behaviour’…’lack of professionalism’…’typical of your conduct over the years’ and so on. At the end of all this I said to him ‘You’ve heard a lot from me. Anything you’re not happy with?’ George looked at me with a gleam in his eye and said ‘Yes, I don’t like your tie.’ Then he started laughing. It was quite extraordinary. I don’t know why, but I started laughing too, and we both decided to go down to the canteen for a coffee. After that I had the parking spaces re-painted to make George’s diagonal to the others, which he thought was hilarious.

The ongoing beef between two of rap’s biggest names shows no sign of letting up.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been trading barbs since the latter took aim on Big Sean’s Control in 2013. From accusations of marital infidelity, to cultural appropriation and underage sex – nothing has been off limits.
But Kendrick Lamar has just taken things up a notch with the release of “Knot Like Us”. In the blistering seven-minute track K Dot throws any prospect of a truce out of the window, detailing in a series of vicious bars how he doesn’t like Drake’s tie. The lyrics, which we have decided not to reproduce, include detailed descriptions of the occasions Drizzy has worn the tie, its color, its horse pattern, and its width. Having set out the nature of the tie, Lamar then graphically states that he doesn’t like it.
An accompanying video shows Lamar viciously beating a giant tie-shaped piñata with a stick.
Appalled commentators and industry figures, many no strangers to incendiary rap rivalries, immediately rallied around Drake, with legendary producer Metro Boomin’ releasing a statement saying: “There is no place for this in the game and our thoughts are with Drizzy at this time. Everyone is with Drake on this. Criticising a fellow rapper’s tie is just…that’s too much.”
While threats to kill, allegations of sexual impropriety and references to domestic violence are rife in rap, this is thought to be the first time that a performer has ‘gone there’.
Welcoming the decision of prominent rap stations not to play the track, a tearful Drake called a press conference yesterday, stating: “Knockabout references to murder are one thing. But this has absolutely knocked me for six. I’m flabbergasted.”
The incident has reminded many rap historians of Tupac Shakur dissing Notorious BIG’s belt on the track “Accessory to Murder”.

Another great ep! Interesting discussion about the routes via which younger fans came to know about the 'Paul is dead' stuff. For me, it was the book below (pub. 1982) which I got out of my local library in 1987. It had a double-page spread about the theories, clues etc.
