My grandmother passed away this morning. 15 minutes before, I called and my mom held the phone to Grandma’s ear. I told her how very much I loved her. What a wonderful grandmother she’d been. And how much I’d miss her. My heart keeps reaching for an empty space.

Grandma on the property they owned for many years. They grew those trees from tiny sticks.

I’ve always thought she looked a bit like Audrey Hepburn.

$MARY KOLE Picture Books 2.0 and 3.0 Now that you might have some ideas about de e topics that you want to explore, let me throw another co ball at you: There have been a lot of chides be published since Ursula Nordstrom broke the marke vi open in the late 1940s. A lot. Picture books are published by imprints at all of be sig houses in the U.S. market. They're published abroad. There published by small presses. They're self-published. Thes sitting in a writer's drawer, never to see the light of day. Though I've spent over a decade in children's book publis ing I can confidently say that I've probably read less bar small fraction of .01% of all picture books that have bee published, an even smaller percentage of all the picture book manuscripts ever written, and an even smaller number dal the picture book ideas ever dreamed up. There are no new ideas, truly. But there are some old ones, which are getting left behind e the dust. This is where my idea of Picture Books 1.0 vs. 2.0 and 3.p comes in. Picture Books 1.0 are pretty straightforward. Think about Llama, Lama, Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. Llama is chilling upstairs (a bedtime topic) and suddenly needs to see Mama Llama right now. He's struggling wit separation anxiety (topic). Mama Llama is doing the dishes and talking on the phone, so Llama escalates dramatically (causing "Ilama drama,"* which is a great line). Mama has to reassure Llama that she's there, even if she doesn't come right away (theme, even though it's stated outright, and Llama is pleased. WRITING IRRESISTIBLE PICTURE BOOKS This is a very clear story that works with the topics of bedtime and emotions (impatience, fear, and insecurity), and the theme of separation being healed by love and acceptance between a parent and a child. And it's a huge hit that has spawned a mini empire. But it's also incredibly linear. Child has an experience, Adult measures the child, Lesson is learned, and that's it. This pivot is at the heart of writing modern picture books, and it is the framework we'll use to discuss contemponey character and plot going forward. But what about Pictor Book 3.0, which is mentioned in the heading of this section?
Well, that's the next iteration of the picture book marketplace And now that the SEL and DEl approach is becoming sate rated, I'm already asking myself, "Well, what's next? Whats the evolution going to be?"
The point is, it will be tough to launch a Picture Book 2.0 idea in the Picture Book 3.0 world, which is right around the corner. It's going to be even tougher to enter the Picture Book 3.0 world with a Picture Book 1.0 concept.
That's why it's so important that you learn how to build a picture book idea from the ground up, using theme and topse and strong market knowledge as your launchpad. No matter what happens next in the picture book space, you will be ready, and dreaming in the right direction.

Last week I sat with her, held her hand. Told her I loved her. Listened to her share family stories and soaked up as much Grandma as I could. She was so thin. Her hands were so thin. And she was tired. We went over 4 times, 30 minute visits. One of the 4 times she slept through.

In other updates, the doctor is saying just a few weeks left for my grandmother. I am so grateful we took last week to travel up to see her. And simultaneously so very sad. She was told 3-6 months not long ago. It looks like it’s going to be on the very short side of those 3-6 months.
