As with Covid, the heatwave, while awful for all, is not experienced equally. Brought home in our village yesterday when a thatcher fell from a high-pitched roof, resulting in first responder cars and 2 ambulances - he was blue lighted away. He probably needed the daily rate is likely the answer…
Standing outside at 3.45 - a blissful 22 degrees. The bats are still out but the first tweets are going. Everything will be glad when Sunday gets here and the days cool down.

Some pre-dawn time outside before it gets too hot again. Facing east, outside with all the birds also enjoying the cool air.
Thanks for reminder @jjaron.bsky.social - point fans out of windows in morning, so hot air inside goes out (Stickers on windows go up each May. These huge 1970s windows are lovely for light, but awful for 30+ degree heat -and for birds crashing into them in spring. Stickers help them see the glass)
Water down in shallow containers all over the garden. Doesn’t need anything special - whatever you have in shed or garage. Plant pot saucers work well. Mealworms rehydrating for song birds later on. They’ll find it hard to find food as the ground hardens in the heat.
We can help people who can’t keep themselves cool over the next few days. Offer to close up curtains; put a decent-sized container of water in reach for someone who finds mobility hard even when it’s much cooler than this Check in on your neighbours ❤️ Help open the house when cool & close up by 11
Important to add a ‘give’ in case of breezes - a ‘give’ that isn’t the sail tearing or your wall coming apart (with a nod to British build ‘standards’). You want a point that will give easily and is quickly replaceable. We used twine, as shown, which has worked well. Be prepared to keep replacing
Cheap ‘n’ cheerful, but so-far effective, short-term solution to ludicrously hot UK homes this week 👇🏻 Keeping the house cool so far.
Given that we’re now on Red Alert for heat, apparently - we may well end up using insulation foil taped to the outside of the windows as well as the sails. But so far the sails are doing the job and keeping the house nice and cool.
Also a really good reason to NOT WALK YOUR DOGS IN THE DAYTIME HEAT this week 🥵
Of course, putting up a sail sun canopy over windows and glass doors against the heat is easier if your other half spent his youth as a windsurfing knot tying fanatic. He’s had what’s looked like a happy Father’s Day doing these fixings
I was in my 20s when my dad died - which is too young to lose a parent. Our children never knew their grandfather. Those of you who know me -and of Werner- know that his Holocaust trauma has had generational impacts, but he was my dad: a good man who did his best. We can’t ask more. #FathersDay
