Dementor – A tall, black-cloaked creature with hands that appear decayed. Dementors drain happiness from people and force them to relive their worst memories. Dementors are employed as guards at Azkaban and cannot be seen by Muggles. They can suck a person's soul out through their mouth, which is known as the Dementor's Kiss. They can be repelled by the Patronus Charm. Rowling has called Dementors "soulless creatures" and "among the foulest beings on Earth".[4] She said they were inspired by her own experience of depression.[5][6]

Demiguise – An orangutan-like creature with precognition that can turn invisible.[7] An escaped Demiguise plays a role in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Demiguise pelts are often used to make invisibility cloaks.
Diricawl – A bird that can disappear when threatened. Known as the dodo by Muggles. According to Newt Scamander, the bird's vanishing ability is the reason Muggles believe it is extinct.

Dugbog – A crocodile-like creature that resembles a piece of wood while stationary.
Dukuwaqa – A human that can turn into a shark.
Dwarf – A short, stocky humanoid.

ASSIGNMENTS
Your grade in this class will be based on the following components:
1) Participation: 30%. Your presence in every class in required; while in class you must demonstrate evidence of preparation, attention, and participation. To facilitate active participation you must take notes on readings in your Commonplace book and every class will begin with a common question about the reading.
2) Ethical analysis: 15%. A directed analysis of the ethical decisions and quandaries in the Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas drawing on discussions in class on September 16. Due by 5pm on September 24
3) Ethical comparison: 15%. A directed comparison of the morality and humanity of Simeon and Pelagios drawing on discussion in class on September 28. Due by 5pm on October 8.
4) Casting the saints: 20%. A creative assignment in translating a saint’s life into a modern media property, begun in group discussions on September 30; brief individual presentations in class on October 7 and October 12; artifact due by 5pm on October 14.
5) Commonplace book check-ins: 10% (total). Twice during the quarter I will ask you to upload notes (from readings or in class) taken in your Commonplace book.
6) Engaging grounds: 10% (total)

In both books, Stowers registers distinct dissatisfaction with the state of affairs
in the study of ancient Mediterranean religions (particularly in the first centu-
ries of the Roman Empire). In History, that dissatisfaction is rendered in more
abstract philosophical strokes. In essence, Stowers is fed up with the “antireal-
ists,” that is, those scholars who deny that religion is a real thing in the ancient
(or any) world. “I will argue,” he states at the outset, “that religion is a robust
realistic entity, a social kind, and that ancient Mediterranean religion even with
all of its great diversity operated with some key common principles” (1). The
next three hundred pages walk us through the key points of this claim.

The subtitle of Christian Beginnings is perhaps misleadingly singular: A Study

The Interpretations of Canonical and
Extra-Canonical Portrayals of Saint Joseph in the
Mosaics of the Fifth-Century Triumphal Arch
in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

While scholars have paid significant attention to different aspects of the
mosaics in the triumphal arch of the fifth-century Basilica of Santa
Maria Maggiore, few have formally focused on the use of select canonical and extra-canonical narrative portrayals of St. Joseph in these
mosaics and the ways they served to expand his significance in the Holy
Family beyond how he had appeared in earlier artistic representations.
Thus, the primary concern of this essay is to review the different ways
canonical and extra-canonical narratives of St. Joseph were depicted by
the mosaicists in the mosaics in the triumphal arch. Artistic portrayals
of the Holy Family created prior to Santa Maria Maggiore will also be
examined for comparison. I believe that a careful review of triumphal
arch mosaics demonstrates that, even within the context of a basilica
dedicated to the Virgin Mary as Theotokos, the individual behind the
design of these mosaics, who in this essay will be identified as “the
mosaicist,” believed it was necessary to expand the role of St. Joseph in
the Holy Family by creatively interpreting select canonical and extracanonical narratives.

This study reconstructs a genealogy of the phrase “Great Commission,” a term widely used today to refer to Matthew 28:18–20. Although often assumed to be a neutral mobilizing slogan, the phrase originated in the late sixteenth century and gradually acquired theological authority through its entanglement with ecclesial, imperial, and missionary discourses. Drawing on early modern English texts, this study traces the phrase from its early appearance in 1590 through seventeenth-century baptismal controversies to its institutionalization in the eighteenth century by organizations such as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts and a 1766 sermon of William Warburton. By the nineteenth century, the phrase had become the theological centerpiece of Protestant global missions. This genealogy demonstrates that the “Great Commission” is not only a story about Matthew 28 but also about how empire, theology, and interpretation together shaped the contours of Christian modernity.
