I captured a timelapse as I arranged, planed, sketched, and finally painted a still life with the beautiful fruits and vegetables I bought from the green market yesterday. #watercolor #stillLive
That took all afternoon and I’m really pleased. I did a bunch of preliminary sketches. I also ser up a timelapse so once I figure out a good place to post it, I’ll share that. This is probably the most complicated thing I’ve painted so far. #watercolor #stillLife #produce
I confess I bought all this fruit and produce because it looked good to paint. It also looks good to eat but that’s secondary. #watercolor #stillLife
Some fountain pen sketches from the Hungarian Grand Prix Formula 1 race today. I drew these quickly while watching the TV coverage. #f1 #hungarianGP #penAndInk
Flat white at La Lucha coffee in Noe. I picked up a watercolor pencil to sketch the outlines following what I’ve seen in James Gurney’s live painting videos. I like the effect. #urbansketch #watercolor
Instead of painting my coffee as usual, I painted my croissant instead. #watercolor #urbansketching #SanFrancisco #croissant
A watercolor sketch of the counter at Simple Pleasures Cafe on Balboa Street in San Francisco. I deliberately simplified the palette and I kind of like the effect. #watercolor #urbansketching #SanFrancisco
I’ve been practicing drawing my cat while she naps and am slowly getting better. Last night I got a sketch I’m really happy with. For comparison, I’m also including some of the earlier attempts. #PenAndInk #cat #art
Bernal Hill in May. Watercolor over pen and ink from my own reference photo. I’m pretty happy about the little houses this time. Still more to learn so I can abstract them and make them smaller. #watercolor #SanFrancisco #Bernal
The barista at La Lucha gave me some challenge mode latte art today—a swan. I did not manage to paint it but it did inspire me to go pack to pure watercolor without the ink undersketches I’ve been doing lately. #watercolor #urbansketching #SanFrancisco
Second practice, cockpit view with the widgets #formula1 #PenAndInk #FountainPens
Some pen and ink sketches from the first practice session of the Monaco GP earlier today (I’m watching it on TV as replay) #formula1 #PenAndInk #FountainPens
Bernal Hill in the spring. Pen and ink sketch with watercolor from my own reference photograph. Doing these masses of little houses is hard! I’m going to keep trying because it’s one of my favorite features of San Francisco. #watercolor #PenAndInk #SanFrancisco
Apparently I’m all about shapes this week. (The angle of the vase was different when I painted this, but I didn’t want to photograph the clutter on my table) #watercolor #monochrome
Back and front of a geranium leaf, fountain pen; contour practice from life Because of the Asawa show, I decided to learn more about contour drawing and try it myself. This wasn’t pure blind contour and I did lift the pen, but I mostly looked at the leaf. #PenAndInk #contourdrawing #FountainPens
Art supply shopping advice wanted: I’m going to be visiting the UK for 2 weeks this summer. Are there any watercolor supplies (paints, paper, bushes etc) or gouache that are a better deal to buy in the UK than in the US? Watercolor sketch included as tax payment :) #watercolor #watercolour
Looking down 23rd Street toward Dolores in San Francisco. Painted from a photo I took. I’m using houses to learn how to deal with perspective and angles. Or maybe I want to paint houses so I have to learn how to deal with perspective. #watercolor #SanFrancisco #PenAndInk
I’ve had close flybys like this before and it never stops to feel like a blessing to see and hear and feel a hummingbird hover and feed less than a foot from my face.
They hovered so close I could have touched them with my hands. One fed from a red sage trumpet that hung over my shoulder. I dared not even push my glasses up my nose, never mind grab my phone to photograph.
I had my back to the sage bushes, and two hummingbirds were competing for the resource. They’re not scared of people if you just don’t move too much so I turned towards them slowly. Once they sorted out the territorial dispute, one stayed and fed.
Then I heard a sound like a very small helicopter or a very large mosquito in my ear. I was wearing my gardening hat, a big crushable cowboy hat, and it sounded like the little motor was right above my head. It was a hummingbird, of course. #bloomscrolling #SanFrancisco #hummingbird
I went to the garden after lunch to enjoy my California poppies. While I sat there, one bumblebee after another landed inside the flowers and rolled about. The poppies wobbled under their weight. #bloomscrolling #SanFrancisco
Last year I painted him a cake card, but he said he likes pen and ink more, so that’s what I uses this time. I don’t normally draw cats, so there were a few outtakes before I got one that kind of looks like our cat. I drew from photo references of her. #Cats #art #PenAndInk
Today is @paulmison.bsky.social ‘s birthday, so I drew him a birthday wish from our cat. #Cats #art #PenAndInk
After the sunrise Easter service on Mt. Davidson in San Francisco I sat on the hillside & quickly painted this simplified landscape. The light & mist changed as I painted. I wasn’t trying for complete realism yet the moment I painted was no longer present when I took the photo #watercolor #pleinair
And now a completely different style, a quick painting in my garden as the light was fading and the mosquitos were biting. #watercolor #botanicalart
…with flat washes filling in the defined areas and mostly waiting for each layer to dry before adding another instead of my usual wet-on-wet. I love the effect but somehow it feels less “artistic” than purely painting. I don’t know what’s behind that feeling. #watercolor #PenAndInk
Another Saturday, another flat white, another coffee sketch: I continue to explore ink sketch followed by watercolor. The ink contours made me spontaneously adapt a more illustration style of painting #watercolor #PenAndInk
I watched a bunch of urban sketching videos where they use a pen to draw the contour and then paint over it in watercolor. I decided to try it for my weekly coffee painting. Very different effect, but I also like it. #watercolor #PenAndInk
