What is it like to reclaim your language from a centuries-old book? In the sixth installment of “A Stream of Voices”, Antônio Jorge Madeira Batista Silva explores his lifelong relationship with a dictionary of his language, Krenak, written in 1909. folklife.si.edu/magazine/str...

Text: "Every morning, I would pour myself a cup of coffee and sit by the balcony, letting Tepó (the sun) shine on the pages that flipped through my fingers. I would land my right index at a word and, for the rest of the day, try to use it as many times as I could.
I learned to treat the little yellow book as a relative, forming a bond of kin with the text, my ancestors, and Bruno."
