While looking for something else I found these old pics of the sweetie pie Roland who has been gone now for 5 yrs.

5.5 lb brown headed, white and brown bodied Chihuahua looking down. Chihuahuas do not wish to offend by being too forward with the Alpha.

White belly exposed to the warmth of the sun out on the lawn.

🌱 Asiatic lilies are in bloom on the balcony. They smell terrific!

Lily plants against the siding. One is open at the right. A few long unopened pods behind that going away down the balcony toward a window with plants and things along the way.

6 petaled bloom with orange brown anthers coming out of the center of the flower. Petals are pink with yellow in the center with stripe of green near the center.

Not all the anthers appear the same from flower to flower. A nice variation. 4 anthers hang down around the pistil which has a purplish shiny look. Flower petals above and green foliage blurred below.

Beautiful rust coloured anthers above the purple, shiny, purply pistil that is suspended on a long green stem going back up into the flower's center. Petals and leaves make that background.

Rufous hummingbird conserving energy while it reaches into a white flower of the Hotlips salvia with its dark beak that goes back toward the right eye with the white slash visible above it. A white patch at the neck between the head and body . Little rufous belly below the wing. Shiny green feathers on the back going into rufous coloured feathers to the tail. Two small black feet show on the light coloured branch.

Good Morning!

Juvenile Anna's hummingbird against an red geranium flower, wings spread, little dark feet dangling as it feeds on some perennial purple verbena flowers that have green leaves to the right. Against a blurred background.

🦜🌱 When I had a garden my scarlet runner beans were always pollinated by hummingbirds.

A hummingbird has its beak in the red flower of a scarlet runner. It is facing away from us and appears to be standing on a leaf following the law of conservation of energy. His tail points up and left with his little white rear feathers showing above the little legs All the green is leaves of scarlet runner.

Again, why fly when you can stretch. Up along a yellow bamboo support a hummingbird clings to the stems as it reaches horizontally into a red flower with its beak. The belly is white and rufous coloured to the left after that ending in a dark tail tip. One eye is just visible at the right between a flower stem and a small leaf. Mixed green foliage in the background.

Little buddies.

A mud wasp enjoys the syrup of a ripening Desert King fig. Fig is round with the wasp sitting with its head at the dark center of the fig. The yellow and black wasp's 4 visible yellow legs are at the front of the body clinging to the fig. it has a skinny waist, dark thorax and brown looking wings hanging down at its sides. These wasps do not harm humans.

Always keeping the camera handy allowed me to take a quick pic of this lady bug sitting on my beach chair cushion. Cushion is orange and blue with black dots. Of course, the ladybug is orange with black dots, black head and white cheeks?

That is some eye catching shade of blue! Lovely. Is it scented? I love the scent of some of the violas. This one below is scented. Etain is another viola variety that I like with scent.

Robinia or false acacia, Black Locust.

Flowers of the Robinia hang down in elongated clusters. Lightly scented.

A fairly large tree this one is the biggest I have seen around town reaching up toward the hydro lines.

A friend showed me this one, not in town but not far away. I didn't know that they came in other colours.

Small 'cones' on a tree branch. Like beads in a bunch each one dark with lighter markings.

🌱 A bit of what's growing on my balcony.

Cuphea Llavea I grew from saved seed. A hummingbird favourite.
A pepper plant peeks out from behind. This was taken when they were hardening off in April.

One flower of the succulent Ghost Plant.

Some of the Cupheas come up pink from saved seed.

A visitor to the primroses. A tiny black and yellow flier hunts for aphids at the stems and flower bases. but unfortunately there were none.

🌱 The Walking Onions are doing their weird thing.

At the tips of these onions are bulbils and flowers and weirdly reaching mini stalks coming out of them. They fall to the ground and start new plants this way.

Not weird enough on their own they create shadows in the morning sun against the pale siding.

Bulbs are forming at the tip of one. When they are not blooming these are the sweetest green onions I have tasted and are prolific all summer long. Normally, I must save some bulbils or the plants die on the balcony while they do well in the ground over winter.

🌱 My Clivia has bloomed nicely this year after a bit of travail. It had what is called 'stuck arrow'. That's where the stalk doesn't come up above the leaves to bloom. Caused by either insufficient cold or water. So, I put it out on the balcony and voila!

Orange Clivia flowers in the morning sun. Green leaves reflect the light. More buds coming along below the blossoms.

Only morning sun for this one as it is reputed to want shade and strong sunlight burns the leaves. Orange flowers backed by long green leaves.

The Alba is the variety that made me aware that hummingbirds live here over winter when I saw one feeding on it in the cold. The Magellanicas go on blooming for ages in the cold with just a little protection. Here's one I am looking for. Don't know its name. Do you?

Fuchsia with miniature flowers blooming Nov 26 2015. It was under an overhanging patio roof. I always brought them into the garage when it got too cold but they did tolerate a lot.

There were lots and lots of Turkey Tails too.

Turkey tails growing o a log along the path.

Bottoms up. White bottoms of turkey tails that stretch all the way up the tree trunk mingled with the green moss.

An old bridge over a stream that leads to the lily patches. To be used 'at own risk'. Still better than the log we used to have to cross to get over.

Kids took me to see the Erythroniums, Dog Tooth Lilies, in bloom at Easter. Daughter and I have been down to see them often throughout the years.

The white lilies always grow within 20 feet of the river. Not everywhere. We had to walk in a little ways to get to them.

Out in the wild with no one to see except those of us who know where and when they are. A bit early this year due to an unusually mild winter.

Saw some tulips the other day.

Rows of tulips in a field. Sawdust between rows. White greenhouse in the background and a sliver of a river in front of the trees in the background.

These hold a lot of light at the tips of the petals.

Aha! A renegade in the crowd. A yellow and red tulip in the midst of the pinks.

More hummngbirds.

Leaves of a Solomon's Seal plant along horizontal stems with white flowers almost hidden under the leaves. An Anna's hummingbird feeds from the dangling blossoms.

End of day light. Ana's juvenile hummingbird sits on the edge of a fountain washing its beak before a bedtime bath.

One of favourites. A young male Anna's hummingbird.

A blur of green background shrubs. Sitting on a small branch is a white bellied young bird rising up to a dark patch turning to red up under the chin with the beak turning to the side reflecting light long its length. Under an olive green head is the round black eye.

I got this idea from a neighbour and the shade from a thrift shop. Plus I would scatter some seed under a big tree where it didn't snow as much.

A bird feeder covered with a glass lamp shade with snow on top. It required a strong support to hang from as it was very heavy. Surrounding shrubs also have snow on them.

Same feeder with a shy thrush feeding in it and a towhee to the right in a shrub. They only visited the yard when there was a lot of snow when it is more difficult to find food. No matter how much it snowed seeds remained dry.

Now that's funny! My wee Roland would have his kibble in a bowl and wet food on a plate; about a tbsp of lamb, fish or something he was not allergic to. Why do dogs go to their food when someone arrives? Hint hint!

5.5 lb Chihuahua getting pushy demanding feeding! Ha ha. Never. Roland was the sweetest dog who knew how to hint!

I'm too old and decrepit to bike far but I do ride to places to walk among the trees as well as to get my groceries which are much easier to carry on the bike.

Red bicycle parked next to leaning tree branches on dry grass next to a spit rail fence and bench at the right. Bicycle has baskets attached for groceries etc. At an estuary where river meets the ocean.

A good day when I spotted where someone had clipped my lost bike key to a fence. I always have a red tag on my bike keys for easy spotting should they be dropped on the road. This was a good day!

I marveled at the ice balls on Georgian Bay but saw them only once at a distance. A local tidal river one winter.

River water reflects light and white vertical tree branches across the river that has a line of shadowed rocks crossing horizontally. White sheets of ice lie on top of rocks and the river's surface.

My past garden space was limited. I grew a zucchini in a 15 gallon pot and up a support. I do like the striped ones!

A mix of vegetables in a basket. Long string beans left, small dark egg plants, a few tomatoes and a striped zucchini. There is a hard to see dark green pencil for size.

🦜 I heard a Steller's jay the other day. Plus an eagle. Images were taken in late October one year.

Steller's jay tilts head back while having a drink. Sitting on the black edge of a fountain bowl full of shiny wet rocks.

Cheeky black crow pulls at a white tail feather of an eagle feeding on a salmon it was gifted by a couple of people at the beach one morning. I gather the bird had been released after being cared for after injury. White head of the eagle bends to the fish and a white tail feather shows as the crow pulls at it. Another crow sits in front of the eagle hoping for a bit of fish if the eagle happens to look away. Shallow tidal pools reflect light in the background.

Same eagle looks up keeping a firm grip on the fish under its feet. The salmon belly is white. The crow in front is black! Various beach rocks appear as bumps on the surface of the shallow water.
