💧 Water underpins life, yet Europe faces increasing water scarcity and extreme events like droughts and floods due to climate change. A forthcoming EASAC report, due in 2027, will provide science advice to help policymakers safeguard Europe’s water resources and build climate resilience.
🎉 As we celebrate EASAC’s 25th anniversary, we asked Heinz Faßmann, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, about his perspective on what the future holds for this network of European science academies: “The next 25 years for EASAC are open,” he said. @oeaw.bsky.social #EASAC #Sience4Policy
Last week at #EUSEW2026, Paulo Ferrão joined the panel discussion “Resilience & Preparedness in Europe’s Energy Transition” co-hosted by #EERA, #SINTEF and #EASAC. He emphasized the role of energy system Integration in achieving Europe’s climate ambition and #EnergySecurity. 📹 youtu.be/6CYIDCy0KJk
🎉 Today, EASAC celebrates 25 years of science for policy advice! Since its founding in 2001, EASAC’s mission has always been to unite Europe’s brightest minds to serve the public good. ”That mission is now more vital than ever,” says Lise Øvreås, President of EASAC. 🔗 easac.eu/news/details...
Last week, EASAC held its annual Council Meeting in Nicosia, hosted by the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts and national partners. Discussions on #Science4Policy in times of crisis, strategy and partnership updates reinforced our mission to provide science advice for a resilient Europe.
Last week, the #EASAC Environment Steering Panel met in Amsterdam to advance its mission to provide science-based advice for EU environmental policy. A key topic of discussion was the upcoming project on water scarcity and retention in Europe. We thank @knaw-nl.bsky.social for hosting the meeting.
The EASAC Board met in Oslo this week, kindly hosted by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Board members and programme directors discussed strategic challenges, upcoming milestones and ways to increase the impact of #Science4Policy advice from European academies through EASAC. #ItsScience
🤝 In Brussels, our President Lise Øvreås met Sabine Henzler, Director for Strategy and Impact at the Joint Research Centre @ec.europa.eu to advance cooperation under an #MoU. ➡️ #EASAC looks forward to continued collaboration with the JRC to inform EU policymaking. @scienceinnovation.ec.europa.eu
In letter to @ipcc.bsky.social, leading scientists, including #EASAC experts, urge the #IPCC to fix loopholes in its carbon-accounting rules. They warn: splitting land-use and #energy accounting lets countries claim #CO2 cuts not reflected in real emissions. 🌱 Read it here: scienceonbiomass.org/
⚠️ Southeast Europe’s #energy security is under pressure amid rising geopolitical tensions. New pipelines are not the answer, said @nduic.bsky.social, Co-Chair of the #EASAC Energy Panel at an IENE event at @europarl.europa.eu last week. Instead, he urged the region to unlock its renewable potential.
♀️ Marie Curie made history in 1903 as the first woman to win a #NobelPrize, sharing it with her husband Pierre for their work on radioactivity. ⚖️ Yet 123 years on, women account for under 7% of all Nobel laureates. Recent gains aside, structural change remains painfully slow. #FromPresenceToPower
In our miniseries on leading #WomenInScience with @iapartnership.bsky.social we explore challenges and reflections on the position of women in the STEM community. To every woman driving change in science and policy: Your rigour, empathy and bold vision inspire us and future generations. #ItsScience
▶️ Live now from @europarl.europa.eu: EASAC’s Energy Steering Panel co‑chair Professor Neven Duić participates in a debate on energy security, hosted by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe, IENE: www.youtube.com/live/97A3eMU... @nduic.bsky.social #EnergySecurity #ItsScience
🏢 Most #EU Member States failed to submit draft National Building Renovation Plans under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive on time. 🔋 Buildings account for one third of EU energy use. ♻️ Several #EASAC reports highlight that #Decarbonisation is key for #ClimateAction and #EnergySecurity
👩🔬 Still, representation does not equate influence. Although women’s presence has increased in many organizations, this has not consistently translated into leadership roles, says the 2026 report “Towards gender equality in scientific organizations” by @iapartnership.bsky.social #IWD2026 #WomenInSTEM
This #IWD2026 we’re launching #FromPresenceToPower, a mini-series on #WomenInScience in cooperation with @iapartnership.bsky.social! ⚖️ Our first feature, #EASAC President Lise Øvreås reminds us that gender equality in science needs structural change so women can lead, influence and set the agenda.
💡 “It is important that the voice of science, channelled through the academies of #Europe, is heard and has an impact on #energypolicy decisions,” says Alessandro Allegra, EASAC’s Energy Programme Director. Learn more about our Energy programme: easac.eu/programmes/e... #scienceadvice #itsscience
♻️ The #CircularEconomy is not only essential for a habitable planet; it is also major business opportunity. Yet the EU remains far from its goal to double circularity by 2030. 🔗 As @envi.europarl.europa.eu debates #plastics circularity tomorrow, we reiterate EASAC’s advice: easac.eu/publications...
#EASAC works across three #science4policy programmes: #Energy, #Environment and #Biosciences & Public Health. 🔬 But what are biosciences, actually? And why do they matter for policy, industry and society? Here, we explain the key principles and disciplines! 🧬 Learn more: easac.eu/programmes/b...
On International #WomenInScience Day, we celebrate the brilliant women who led #EASAC science advice over the past year. Their leadership and expertise advanced evidence-based policy across Europe. Many more are involved—thank you for inspiring the next generation. #Science4Policy #itsscience

EASAC attended the AI in Science summit in Copenhagen to discuss the responsible use of AI in science and shape advice principles. Also the @ec.europa.eu's RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) initiative coordinating AI resources for data, talent and research funding across the EU was launched.
Happy 200th anniversary to our member MTA, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences! And what could be a better way to celebrate than organising a conference on the Past, Present and Future of Learned Societies: The changing role of Academies in the 21st century?
Last week, an EASAC delegation met @ec.europa.eu Environment Commissioner @jessikaroswall.ec.europa.eu for an exchange on our “Changing #wildfires" report. We appreciate the Commissioner’s interest in the topic, and discussed linkages to the #water resilience strategy and the new European #Bauhaus.
Check out the 38th Conference on Issues of Energy Resources and Energy in #Zakopane 🇵🇱, Oct 19-22, 2025! Lidia Gawlik from @polskaakademianauk.bsky.social will present findings on Security of Sustainable Energy Supplies. Conference language is Polish. Programme: se.min-pan.krakow.pl/program-konf...
Meet the alternatives to #meat 🙃 👉 easac.eu/publications... #vegan #veganbrussels #eu #agriculture #foodsafety
Reducing #meat consumption is critical. But how good are the look-alikes?
