In making the changes, VA officials cite the president’s 30 January executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government”. The primary purpose of the executive order was to strip most government protections from transgender people. The VA has since ceased providing most gender-affirming care and forbidden a long list of words, including “gender affirming” and “transgender”, from clinical settings.

Yesterday Bernie Sanders spoke in Iowa City, and then again to two overflow spaces. People came from all over the midwest. Local speakers included impacted federal workers, students, and union leaders. Workers of the world, unite. We are the ones who can defeat authoritarianism.

Coercive natalist politics, full-throated rejections of transgender people’s selfhood, and policies weakening women’s economic position are, much like the push to AI, a bid to force labor in line. Gender as a hierarchy is first and foremost about the distribution of labor, with those assigned productive labor described as men and those assigned reproductive labor—that is, the labor that makes life itself possible—described as women. Everything from sex to childbirth to cooking to caregiving to housework is labor that is simultaneously very valuable—creating, sustaining, and reproducing value—yet widely exploited for little or no cost to the people who benefit from it most.

Misogyny, as affect and governing philosophy, is the enforcement mechanism keeping feminized forms of labor—from the bedroom to the boardroom—as exploitable and accessible as any piece of software. And given how difficult it is to automate or replace, the only solution is defending like hell the attitudes and structures that suggest it should be free and readily available.

While capital can funnel billions upon billions of dollars into replicating and automating productive labor, reproductive labor is much further from the grasp of automation. AI engineers may often borrow femininity—giving AI chatbots and digital assistants feminine voices and names, for example—but the physical complexities of childbirth and psychological complexities of childrearing render it all but immune to automation (though the century-long quest for artificial wombs may suggest never say never).

Occasionally, you’ll hear feminism and transgender rights described as “luxury beliefs” or “boutique issues” by people (usually men) on the left who find “identity politics” frivolous at best and destructive at worst, as if one’s relationship to gendered systems of domination was far removed from struggles against domination. But as the billionaires clearly understand quite well, “masculine” domination of a workforce runs parallel to the same along racial and gendered lines, and misogyny itself must be seen the equal to the exploitative forces of automation and brutalizing tactics meant to divide and terrify workers while keeping them un-organized.
