(And I am only using the strictest definition of this dynamic here. In reality, it should be expanded to include all essays about What the Left Should Do by corporate Democratic officials, mewling centrists, "common sense" Democratic operatives who now write for the Free Press, and so on. In all of these cases, people who fundamentally disagree with your goals are allegedly giving you good faith tips on what you should be doing.) Our national political media discourse would be greatly improved by eliminating all of these pieces. Already, wise editors do not commission them, non-hacky writers do not write them, and smart readers do not bother to read them, except for comedy purposes. They exist in an intellectual world that is by and for suckers. If you find yourself in that orbit, now is a good time to show yourself out.

Ciroc got so sick with diarrhea that we wound up taking her to the emergency vet Monday night. She was given pills and a prescription for bland food. She has gotten better but hates the food and can't understand why we aren't sharing our superior meals with her as usual.

Is there a rising Democrat who will give this speech — the one that says that Democrats stand for freedom and fairness, not radicalism and self-righteousness; the one that never disdains tradition even if it seeks to improve it; the one that knows that utopianism is no substitute for pragmatism, and that purity is not superior to compromise?
That Democrat needs to stand up now, before his party gets swept away by the flood it vainly believes will soon recede.

Don't the Democrats realize if you let these people run they might WIN? THEN where will you be?

Against this tide, the position of many mainstream Democrats is to dodge the ideological fight with the left while warning that, outside of deep-blue districts like those in New York City, democratic socialism is an electoral loser that only provides Trump with political ammunition. In Michigan, Haley Stevens, El-Sayed's opponent in the Democratic primary, is campaigning on the argument that "no one wants Abdul to win more than the Republicans" - that is, that Republicans see him as the more beatable opponent come November.
I remember the same case being made by mainstream conservatives against Trump when he was running in 2016: A vote for him in the Republican primary, so the argument went, was tantamount to a vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election.
Then he won.

I was moved to look up this largely unforgettable quote because people, including my colleague and friendly now-acquaintance (I don’t see him much at all since he moved out of New York) A.O. Scott, are talking about (and in Scott’s case, with) David Thomson about his book, dropping on Tuesday, called A Sudden Flicker of Light: A Revisionist History of Movies, in which Thomson delivers the message “the condition of movie has an extraordinary way of telling us we don’t matter,” which isn’t exactly Hecht’s complaint, but I’m sure you get where I’m coming from here. One way the movies have bamboozled us, Thomson tells Scott, is that they compel us to like or identify with characters like the Corleone family, who are, you know, really pretty bad people.

The "corruption" of Supreme Court
Justices-the friendliness with businessmen, receiving gifts from them, etc.—seems to recommend Miliband; they are part of the capitalist class writ large, but the clear referee role in these rulings, keeping the state structure intact, really looks much more Poulantzian to me. What we are seeing then is the Supreme Court decreeing how the "committee for the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie" is to be constituted: it can be captured by quasi-criminal elements, manipulated by petty businessmen seeking a quick buck from fat government contracts, it can be used to line the pockets of cronies, and to practice increasingly outrageous forms of open corruption —but only up to a point. Just don't mess with the program.
