How it feels reading short story collections #booksky
It's Mailbag Monday! This week we've got gay tree murders, dogs on dogs on dogs, funerals and festivals, sword-swinging adventures, and Shakespearean sorcerers. I love a mix of authors I've read for years and new-to-me voices. Perfect for long evenings of summer reading! What's on your TBR?
Remembering fondly the shooters bar that I used to go to in Amsterdam, the sort of place where you HAD to get pictures of the drinks because that was a big part of what you were paying for. The size of an apartment, always packed to the gills. Good times. Louisville should have a place like that.
NEW DRINK ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about THE FAREWITCH OF FOXE HOLLER by Ellen Pauley Goff. A gentle romantic fantasy set in the backwoods & gardens of rural Kentucky, a loving tribute to good food & great company. Savory & sweet treats inspired our drink: the Frost Julep!
SPECIAL BONUS EPISODE!! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're celebrating our FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY with a treat: a mocktail inspired by S.T. Gibson's EVOCATION. A hard fantasy occult soap opera as dear to me as a book can be. For the most sorcerous queers in the coven! Our drink is The Hanged Man.
It's not always easy living in the prettiest place on earth, but someone has to do it.
Happy Summerween! I needed something spooky for the swelter so I pulled together this stack of horror and uncanny fantasy just perfect for these hot summer days. Plus, many of these books have been featured on Bar Cart Bookshelf, so you know there're poolside bevvies! What's on your Summerween TBR??
11 years ago today at the Center Hellenic Studies, I celebrated the birthday of “George Homer the Genius”, a 100% very real individual from history.
NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about THE TAPESTRY OF FATE by Shannon Chakraborty. A riveting historical adventure fantasy on the high seas of the Persian Gulf, this is another entrancing adventure for Amina Al-Sirafi! Our drink is a mocktail, the Khatti Ugal!
It's Pride! It's a rainbow stack! I've been posting one a week this month because I have so many wonderful queer books on my shelves to celebrate. Which of these have you read?
Ahaha!! My contributor copy of SHATTER THE SUN has arrived. I'm so excited to share my story with all of you & to read the offerings of all the other contributors. Sharp blades, glamorous wizards, terrible monsters, tortured priests, & so much more await in this landmark new anthology of queer S&S!
NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about FOUNDLING FATHERS by Meg Elison. A timely science fiction satire, both drily funny and sharply barbed as America's founders are cloned in service of a vast rightwing conspiracy. Our drink is a Memorial!
It's Mailbag Monday! This week we've got some top notch horror, queer adventures on the high seas and strange tidings at the end of time, tales of family and fealty, and the dark hearts of wicked souls. Plus MARVELOUS short fiction!! What looks good to you?
Happy Father's Day! I pulled together this stack of books featuring fathers and exploring fatherhood: from the dads who are Perfect and Kind to the ones who are... not, mentors & protectors, priests, psychics, soldiers, & kings, good & the bad alike in one of our earliest & strongest relationships.
It's Pride! It's a rainbow stack! I'm posting *at least* one a week this month because I have so many wonderful queer books on my shelves to celebrate. Which of these have you read?
NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about KILL ALL WIZARDS by Jedediah Berry. A sword and sorcery novella of vengeance, brutal blades, and elegantly appointed tearooms, this book is uproarious: clever, charming, and utterly entrancing. Our drink is a frosty freezy Gotchimus!
The thing about classic Sword and Sorcery is that it's super queer if you squint. The thing about SHATTER THE SUN is you don't have to squint. www.neonhemlock.com/shatter-the-...
I read a short story every day! Here’s what I’ve been reading the past two months. It’s been a lot of single author collections which has been soooo much fun. Great to see different modes of play within a single body of work. What looks good to you?
It's Pride! It's a rainbow stack! I'm posting *at least* one a week this month because I have so many wonderful queer books on my shelves to celebrate. See any favorites? What's on your TBR?
NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about THE PERILOUS LIFE OF JADE YEO by Zen Cho. A frothy epistolary novella, this literary comedy of manners dazzles and delights in true effervescent style. Utterly charming! Our drink is an Artistic Education, a bright bubbly mocktail.
True HORROR horror. A collection that looks at the darkness bigotry, hate, and fear with phantasmagoric exuberance. Dark, and cruel, with a reminder that our darkest fears are real, present, and immediate. Powerful work from a master of the genre and a tremendous addition to my library!
Thirty who? Thirty two! Here’s to another beautiful year of good drinks, great books, and the marvelous company of wonderful friends. I’m soooo excited y’all get to meet the Peacock Wizard this year!
It's Pride! It's a rainbow stack! I'm gonna be posting one a week this month because I have so many wonderful queer books on my shelves to celebrate. See any favorites?
A year ago today I was chatting with @leemandelo.bsky.social about AMPLITUDES. And there’s no better time than now to snag a copy of this landmark anthology!! I think about it alllll the time!
