Amid scandal allegations, a total unknown blasted a two-term governor out of the U.S. Senate race and received more primary votes than any candidate in Maine's history — simply by promising Medicare For All & an end to forever war.

This is a basic indisputable fact that America’s entire political & media establishment now wants everyone to ignore as that establishment tries to put its thumb on the scale in the selection of a new candidate.

Morris Katz was a very public surrogate for Graham Platner. Who would even know who Eric Swalwell's consultants even are. Katz is an ad guy. Platner's campaign spent more on advertising than the establishment candidate, Janet Mills, spent in total.

you never hear this much about consultants by name when a candidate drops out over a scandal. certainly didnt happen to swalwells. it sort of gives the establishment game away. they know who really wields power in washington and its the ad buy profiteers who are threatened by katzs model

Joy Reid was on a major news network for years. Does she really not understand that Joe Manchin was one person and not Democrats in general?

The former MS NOW host pointed to ex-President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan as one example where the Dems sold out their constituents. Reid said half of that legislation was supposed to help “ordinary” Americans by providing free preschool and subsidized childcare, but then-Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) sabotaged it. That showed the Dems don’t care about their voters, Reid said.

David Dayen claims that the candidate that is trying to take away local communities' control on an issue is the one running on "hyperlocal issues," while the other candidates are "running nationalized races."

BRINK AND MAASDAM ARE RUNNING nationalized races that haven’t focused on hyperlocal issues as Lawrence has. And Democratic candidates have been told this year not to raise the ire of powerful AI firms spending tens of millions in primaries. That shows through in the candidates’ approaches to the rising issue of AI data centers.

Maasdam, on local radio, tried to thread the needle by saying that Michigan should compete for data centers—“If we don’t participate in these in the way that it’s coming, all those opportunities will go to other states”—while also saying local groups should be protected from electricity price spikes and given full transparency about community impact. The development should be “at least neutral to the environment,” he added. Ultimately, he said, “we have to do this (and) I want to see this done in the right way.”

That answer is on every side of the issue and no side, all at once.

Similarly, Brink said at a campaign forum in mid-June that “data center proposals should be evaluated locally with environmental safeguards.” Deferring to the locals is a way not to take a position. The cautiousness is deliberate, and it leads to candidates tying themselves in knots.

Lawrence, by contrast, supports a federal moratorium on data center construction, and he’s stood directly with residents working on that locally. Howell Township, which is in the district, just extended its moratorium. The issue resonates in places like Michigan, where industrial manufacturing once thrived and disruptive warehouse structures that don’t create jobs are being built.

Brink has accused Michigan Values PAC, which ran the ad, for falsely using artificial intelligence; the ad includes an image of Trump holding up a picture with Brink’s face on it, seemingly just a stand-in for the nonvisual fact that he nominated her for an ambassadorship. Brink’s bigger claim was that the PAC had coordinated with VoteVets. “Matt Maasdam and his out-of-state, dark money allies are attacking me with AI deepfakes that mislead voters about my proven record standing up to Trump,” she said in a statement.

More of the Bernie Bro polling game. First say that the Bro candidate is leading and then say the polling not showing the Bro leading "feels like an outlier," so says David Dayen. Then have someone who has endorsed the Bro candidate provide analysis of the proclaimed winning.

THAT LAWRENCE IS LEADING the August 4 Democratic primary for Michigan’s Seventh, a district formerly held by centrist Sen. Elissa Slotkin and currently in the hands of Republican Tom Barrett, might surprise some people. But he has been on top in most available polls, including in an internal poll from one of his two Democratic primary opponents, ex-Navy SEAL and business executive Matt Maasdam. A third poll sponsored by his other opponent, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, has her so far out in front that it feels like an outlier.

To some campaign organizers and observers, Lawrence’s lack of fit into the typical swing-seat candidate box is actually the reason he’s winning. “This is the year to prove the point that bold economic populists can win in swing districts,” said Adam Green of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which has endorsed Lawrence. “Will shatters the conventional wisdom that we need a Slotkin to win.”

William Lawrence is being supported by multiple groups with super PACs and this dark money group too. One of the board members of the dark money group is a Democratic Party insider, as they are a state party head, the head of the association of state party heads, and a Vice Chair of the DNC.

I'm honestly curious, and I don't mean any disrespect: Are you a Michigander?

This isn't to say, if you're an out-of-stater, that you couldn't have an opinion about this candidate. But it's unusual for folks even in the same state to be outspoken about a candidate not in their own district.

Here is an example of how polling is being used misleadingly by Bernie Bros to push their candidates. Qasim Rashid says that "all the polling shows that [Abdul El-Sayed] is the favorite". The poll shown shows him leading the Republican by 1 and Stevens losing by 1. The margin of error is 4 points.

The bold progressive message that appeals to the likes of, Rebecca Traister, who is an elite who recently moved to Maine. It was very much about Graham Platner, per Traister. nymag.com/intelligence...

Me? I thought Platner was terrific. He was smart, inspiring, a generational talent on the stump. He made people feel good and hopeful in a time that wasn’t good or hopeful. I saw how he made them googly-eyed with irrational fanaticism, a quality that is irritating but also rare and powerful in politics.

Part of what I liked about Platner was that he sounded so much like some of the female politicians I have believed in and who have lost again and again and again. Women running for office are almost never able to make people googly-eyed. He said the same things they did but in a register that was received as inspiring, not hectoring; as populist, not professorial.

Graham Platner won the Democratic primary in part by appealing to elites who recently moved to Maine. Those are not the people that a Democrat needs to appeal to, to win over Susan Collins voters who also voted for Biden in 2020.
