I love it when birds blink in the photo

grackle, blinking, nictitating membrane over the eye, so it looks like a prophet on any fantasy/sci fi show about to be like "you will die when the seventh goose falls silent" or whatever. Also the grackle is stunningly handsome

every time I think I've probably seen everything I'm ever going to see at the river, I'm wrong

river otter whuffling around on a fallen tree

two river otters amidst a mess of fallen trees and sticks and whatever. One is fully turned away so you just sort of see wet hair and a suggestion of butt and feet. The other is looking away but showing a side view of itself with its mighty tail raised up in the air

you go along in life thinking you've seen every awkward heron pose there is and then, one day, you float past this

a great blue heron standing up totally straight with its wings lowered and curved out in front of it, sort of like cupped hands or like it's holding one of those old solar tanning reflector things in front of itself. The internet variously refers to a "flasher pose", "heraldic pose," "delta pose" and "obelisking" for thermoregulation of some kind and frankly I don't know what's correct

bald eagle that is maybe 4ish years old? -- not quite at full adult plumage but getting close

eagle flying overhead -- its body is mostly brown but peppered with bits of white all over, and its head is mostly white but peppered with small bits of brown; its tail seems like it is just starting to show bits of white

i did brave the relentless brightness of the sky yesterday to attempt birding anyway

immature male orchard oriole, his colors not particularly visible due to him being somewhat backlit by the hideous cloudless sunlight, but said sunlight pokes through the thinner parts of his throat as he yells from his branch

a normal view of a yellowthroat, consisting of: a bright smear of yellow and barely-glipsed bird-shaped outline amidst a wheaty-colored field of sedge or cattails or some sort of marsh grass stuff (I am bad at plants)

black and white warbler, with exquisite stripeyness, standing on the side of a tree trunk like some kind of nuthatch, which is what I thought it was until I looked at the photos just now

osprey casually flying off whilst carrying a fish roughly the same size as its own torso

From Ball of Fire (1941): Gary Cooper in the foreground. He has fallen on the ground next to a book and is picking up the book in puzzlement. In the background there is a dead guy, face up, with back flat on the ground. (I mean. Barbara Stanwyck in Ball of Fire, with some sort of half-helmet bangs that are curled under so high on her head that it almost looks like a hat, then hair at the sides both combed back from her face and curled down the side and bottom but straight down the back and between. i don't really know how to describe it but it's that sort of 1940s hair styling that looks like it required 3 hours and small steam engine or something to create
