Found out about a new bird just now

Wikipedia page for "Powerful owl." Text says "The powerful owl (Ninox strenua), a species of owl native to south-eastern and eastern Australia, is the largest owl on the continent. It is found in coastal areas and in the Great Dividing Range, rarely more than 200 km (120 mi) inland. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species also refers to this species as the powerful boobook."

Thank God none of my writing about this book from 2016 was published, though, in part because I was incapable of addressing what Hoby does here (though mostly because it would have been horrifically exposing of a deeply 19-year-old perspective)

This enormous cast of characters is diverse mostly in terms of the variegated peculiarity of inner lives. As for “diversity” in the sense of gender parity and racial representation: not so much. The two main female characters, Avril Incandenza and Joelle van Dyne, both happen to be gorgeous. When it comes to the novel’s handful of Black characters, some of whom speak in a cartoonish version of Ebonics, perhaps the most tactful thing to be said is something like: It was a different time. And yet from this horde of fretting, feeling, interfacing selves a truth emerges: that loneliness is a universal problem experienced by each person in a unique way. The novel also suggests—mumblingly, without making eye contact, not wanting to be corny about it—that one’s own self becomes a little less hideous the more one attends to other selves. Not all of whom are entirely hideous.

the 30th anni of Infinite Jest means 10 years of committed Jestheadism on my part: I picked it up as a depressed pothead; like Hermione Hoby writes, "I was unaware that I was committing a form of gender treason; I knew only that little or nothing I’d read had come close in terms of sheer pleasure."

We all worship something, Infinite Jest argues. The novel eschews the climax and resolution of a traditional plot in favor of a dense, staggered epic, told half through endnotes. Together, these swirling pages imagine what that supplication might look like in a hyper-capitalist future that now feels alarmingly close to America in the 2020s. It endures—despite its mammoth size, despite its frenetic digressions, despite Wallace's curdled reputation as a so-called toxic male genius—for the prescience of its vision and the clarity of its messages about addiction and devotion. The recovering 12-steppers it follows at a halfway house are not the only characters who submit to a higher power. Various people—secret agents, boarding-school students, lost Bostonites—are in thrall to drugs, to tennis, to depression, to the cause of Quebec separatism (really), and Infinite Jest demonstrates that their various compulsions and repetitions are as much a religion as reciting the Serenity Prayer is. That’s why the book’s most famous device, a film so lethally entertaining that anyone who sees it watches it until they die, is so compelling: It represents the ultimate form of surrender.

Ten years is a long time for a young person. The teens I saw reveling in the streets in rainbow clothes, hair glitter, and body paint were born recently enough that they might not even remember the day of the Obergefell ruling. Older members of their generation were just teenagers when it came down. The bisexual rapper Doechii, who performed at a free concert near the National Mall on Pride weekend, was 16 in 2015; the lesbian pop star Renée Rapp, a grand marshal of the WorldPride parade, was only 15. The youngest Gen Zers, born in 2012, were toddlers at that time.
