The latest newsletter from @weareravenous.com linked to this tweet from the bird app about a "Japanese tourist who learned about free chips and salsa the hard way" while in the US for the World Cup and it's better than anything I could have imagined. Absolutely delightful.

USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.

Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.

I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."

"They just come with the table, man."

They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. bligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.

This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.

I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.

"Did we…?"

"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."

Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.

My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."

Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.

I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.

Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.

I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.

Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

In 2012, Wynkoop Brewery made an April Fools’ Day video announcing the creation of Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout, referencing the classic Western snack of fried bull testicles. Fans responded enthusiastically, even though the concept was a joke. Wynkoop followed up by actually brewing the beer.

Jokes aside, beer nerds approve of the nutty brew. Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is 7.5 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) and three BPB (balls per barrel). And to drive the point home, the self-proclaimed “ballsiest canned beer in the world” is sold in a two-pack. Brewers add roasted barley, seven specialty malts, Styrian Goldings hops, and a hint of sea salt to complete the recipe. The brewery describes the inky, viscous stout as “assertive” (which might be projection). Earthy, savory notes of chocolate and coffee round out the stout’s slightly bitter, dry finish.

Agreed! But also, you'd still come out on the losing end with that pick. I speak from unfortunate experience. But it might not be as bad as one of the worst beers I've ever tasted: Dogfish Head Chocolate Lobster stout.

This scaled-up batch has a robust porter base and was brewed with live lobsters, which were added directly to the boil to cook off for the kitchen. Along with the lobsters, just over 6 pounds of dark cocoa powder were added to the whirlpool, along with a basil tea that was added to compliment both the chocolate and lobster.

The result is a rich dark ale with notes of bittersweet chocolate and roast, with a slight herbal nuance and a subdued taste of the ocean in the finish. Just like the song goes -- "it wasn’t a rock, it was a Choc Lobster!"

The first book contains some of the worst writing I've ever encountered. I jumped ahead to book 14 afterward, which was a nominal improvement.

The waitress arrived for the food. We ate in silence. The portions were huge. The fried stuff was great. The eggs were delicious. This guy Eno had away with eggs. I washed it all down with pints of coffee. I had the waitress running back and forth with the refilled jug.

The Bentley was a lovely automobile, but it was not what I needed. If the surveillance went mobile. It was about as distinctive as the most distinctive thing you could ever think of.

Unsurprised that they have a history of discrimination cases being brought against them.

At the same time, Chili’s has faced past legal challenges by LGBTQ employees who say they faced discrimination while working there. In 2019, a gay server at a Chili’s in Phoenix was denied a promotion and forced to quit “because she didn’t fit her boss’s idea of what a woman should look like,” according to the ACLU. In 2013, a cook at a Chili’s in Roseville, California, said his bosses laughed off a sexual assault by coworkers, allegedly telling him, “You’re gay, you like it.”
