As AVB plans to convert it into mass eucalyptus plantations, the Formiga community depends on this land for farming as its means of livelihood. Read the full story of the not-so-green steel and charcoal in Brazil: environmentalpaper.org/2026/08/gree... (5/9)
Recently, an AVB complaint turned into a visit by a large group of armed military police officers. (4/9)
This community has been disputing over 600 hectares of land for several years with Aço Verde Brasil (AVB), a Brazilian producer of so-called green steel and charcoal. AVB claims the land as its own, despite the Formiga community having it registered as their own. (3/9)
They present severe environmental and social consequences, as the Formiga community, in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, is a witness to. (2/9)
🇬🇧EN The promise of “green steel” has become an attractive narrative in global efforts to decarbonize heavy industry. However, “green steel” or “sustainable carbon” is not as green as they appear. [🇧🇷PT Abaixo!] (1/9) #AVB #Eucalyptus #Maranhão #Brazil #Brasil

🏭💸 The largest remaining pulp company in France, Fibre Excellence, has filed for bankruptcy and its fate will be known soon. Read all about it in this great article by Fern's Martin Pigeon: environmentalpaper.org/2026/06/fibr... #FibreExcellence #SaintGaudens
Hundreds of millions of pages of unnecessary paper could be eliminated each year through one simple SEC reform. Elizabeth Underwood, Ph.D. explains how modernizing investor communications can benefit investors, companies, and the environment. environmentalpaper.org/2026/06/a-si...
The supply chain for biomass energy stretches across continents. Our briefing documents Human Rights’ violations occurring in Chile, Brazil, the US, Sweden, Ghana, Mozambique, Uganda, Indonesia, Nepal, and Thailand, showing the global scale of the problem.
These include: ❌Indigenous Rights’ violations ❌Land-grabbing and social conflicts ❌Limiting access to food and clean water ❌ Exposing vulnerable populations to pollution and health risks from biomass facilities.
A brand new briefing by the Biomass Action Network (BAN) exposes the human cost of large-scale biomass energy. As the world looks for alternatives to fossil fuels, burning wood for power and heat has emerged as a popular solution.
📝New briefing just dropped The Biomass Action Network has published a new briefing, warning the UN that reliance on bioenergy to meet Climate Targets will accelerate both forest destruction and climate change. Read more about the briefing in our blog post: environmentalpaper.org/2026/06/bioe...
🏭 🇳🇱 Will the Netherlands continue to subsidise deforestation under the label of 'sustainable energy'? Today, an emergency court case against RWE will be heard in The Hague over hundreds of millions of euros in subsidies for wood pellets imported from Malaysia 💸💸
🌿 Argentina’s forests and communities are paying the hidden price of paper. Indigenous lands are being violated, water contaminated, and ecosystems destroyed for short-term profit. The Tribunal on the Rights of Nature has ruled against Argentina. Why?
Meanwhile, financial institutions have invested USD $5.54 billion in APRIL. Are they willing to continue to be deceived by APRIL's sustainability story? #Deforestation Read the full story 👉 environmentalpaper.org/2026/05/the-...
What is worse than a pulp giant violating its own sustainability and anti-deforestation policy? Dropping the policy altogether. That is what pulp and paper giant Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (#APRIL) just did. 🚨 Alarm bells should be going off 👇
Last week, frontline communities came to the UK to urge Drax’s directors to stop the harm - something they shouldn’t have had to do. It’s past time the UK ended subsidies for Drax’s damage to communities and forests. Add your name: dogwoodalliance.org/actions/shut... #CutCarbonNotForests
🇪🇪’Mets on pärandamiseks, mitte ärandamiseks!’ 👉 ‘The forest is meant to be preserved, not exploited!’ 🇬🇧 Last week, people took to the streets to protest Estonia’s incoming law that will further weaken the protection of forests in Estonia. #Estonia #ForestsMeanLife
We have made a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on climate change in response to a call for evidence of the human rights impacts of climate change technologies.
Advocacy in action! Today, EPN’s Biomass Action Network is exposing the human rights impacts of large-scale biomass energy. Read this thread or our full article here: environmentalpaper.org/2026/04/the-... © Trend Asia
✊ These sad news remind us that accountability must be restored and land rights ought to be protected. Read our full article: environmentalpaper.org/2026/04/sile...
📈 In particular, one statistic illustrates the increase in violence: from 2024 to 2025, murders have doubled – rising from 16 to 32 people whose lives have been taken.
📰 The latest report by Brazil’s Pastoral Land Commission comes with a bleak warning: land conflicts have become increasingly more violent to local, vulnerable communities.
Do you want to see a proper transition away from fossil fuels while safeguarding forests and ecosystems and respecting human rights? We If we are to adequately take action on climate change, we have to exclude false solutions from the transition. #CutCarbonNotForests
🌳 Happy Arbor Day! EPN members are working to protect forests and reduce pressures driving their loss. Our Paper Calculator™ makes impacts visible and supports better choices. Let’s protect what forests make possible. 🌲 Try it yourself: www.papercalculator.org
Ensuring “sustainable” supply chains are exempt from deforestation is more challenging than some would imagine. @thegeckoproject.org investigation provides evidence of how 'shadow integration' allows groups to claim their paper to be 100% free from deforestation, while reality shows differently.
This week, The Guardian highlighted a report which states what the Biomass Action Network has been saying all along: burning wood for energy is not carbon-neutral! In fact,“wood can emit twice as much carbon per unit of energy produced as fossil gas and is far less efficient in generating energy”.
📉 Spoiler alert: we need to consume better! 1️⃣ Less single-use paper packaging and 2️⃣ ending wood burning for energy are two important choices we can make — starting today! 📢 Share to spread the word! #EarthDay #RefuseSingleUse #ForestsAreNotFuel
👀 Swipe to discover the worrying news: we already overconsume more wood than our forests are able to sustainably supply. How do we address this?
🌳🌏 Today is Earth Day! At EPN, we strive to celebrate Earth every day by protecting forests and recognising their ecological and social value. 🪵 However, on this Earth Day, we would like to talk about the #WoodSupplyGap. Have you heard of it?
