Trixie grabbed her arm immediately. “Feenie, no.” This was serious. Phoenica loved milk but very rarely drank it. She had the kind of lactose intolerance that could knock you horizontal with nausea for a full afternoon. Her body would rather deal with a knife in her stomach than a cheese stick. If she was drinking milk, she was ready to jump off the deep end.

Phoenica jingled her purse against the table. “Your strongest proof, please!”

“Uh . . .” The bartender skimmed through the fridge. “We got 1% and 2%.”

“Two percent!” Feenie shouted. “Why not? It’s all the same to me, apparently. In fact, I’d like to order fifty. Fifty glasses! You hear that, Belletrix? I’ll be getting to one hundred percent tonight one way or another.”

“Phoenica,” Trixie grabbed her by the shoulders and looked her dead in the eye. “If you get all hopped up on moocow the only thing you’ll get is 100% tummy hurty.” The bartender filled up a shot glass despite Trixie’s warnings.

“It’s what I deserve!” Phoenica cried in anguish, lifting the glass. Trixie dove for it and the two of them scuffled, but Phoenica won out in the end, tossing the entire thing back in a single gulp. She wiped the white mustache off her lip. “Take me away, my sweet alabaster poison.” Phoenica slammed against the countertop like a flapjack like the drink had instantly killed her.

“Feenie, c’mon,” Trixie put an arm around her, taking care not to rock her back and forth. “Molly’s gonna be fine. I have Giovanni’s number. I can get her the homework.”

“Really?” Phoenica stared up at her with teary eyes as the bartender poured her a second cup. Trixie subtly pushed it away.

“Don’t worry. Molly’s smart. Even if she wants to stay kidnapped, she’s not gonna not go to school. That’s too conspicuous. And if Molly’s good at anything, it’s staying under the radar. Right?”

“I suppose . . .”

Trixie Roughhouse had been walking around the neighborhood in search of her friend for the better part of an hour. Now they were here, smack dab in the bad part of town.

Trixie lowered their head and mumbled in a scary voice. “Whatever part of town I’m in is the bad part of town.” It paid to practice your intimidation tactics every day. You never know when you might need them. Trixie tilted their face up and down, strategically catching the sunlight at different angles so the shadows fell in an optimally scary way. “Oh? Is this the bad part of town? I hadn’t noticed since I . . . never leave it.” Their bang flipped the wrong way. Take two. “I hadn’t noticed since I’m . . . always here. Because I’m bad.”

Eh. There was something there.

Trixie shrugged and let the shadows fall from their face. They’d mess with one-liners later. They rounded the corner and their destination was in sight: The Juice Joint.

The Joint was a bar run out of an old train car. It was an authentic dining car taken from a real train so space in the venue was small, but that was fine. So was the clientele. The neighborhood kids had transformed it into a PG speakeasy, exchanging drinks and snacks for academic “favors”. More cheat sheets and test answers passed through this place than the teacher’s lounge. The school district knew all about the Joint, but they let it stay in operation. The forward-thinking educators of Sweet Jazz decided that a safe environment to teach kids about bribery and embezzlement (two of the city’s primary exports) was more important than making sure they had every part of their times tables memorized.

The Joint had been proudly serving anyone ages seven to seventeen for years. If you were over six feet tall, you needed an ID to verify your age if you wanted to get in. A badly-drawn cardboard skeleton mascot hanging over the door welcomed customers inside.

Ordinarily Phoenica Fleecity’s little goodie two-shoes wouldn’t be caught walking within five miles of this place, but this had been a rough week. She might be nearby.

Trixie’s suspicions were confirmed when they spotted a bike leaning against a telephone pole: Baby blue with all the fixings: Sparkly streamers, high-quality banana seat, a bell, water bottle holder. Heck, stick a trading card in the spokes and this was about as top-of-the-line as a bike could get. Primo target for stealing.

In fact, it was so good that it was suspicious. The owner hadn’t even locked it up (typical Feenie).

A crowd of adolescent would-be bike thieves were gathered around in a circle, staring at it. Was this a trap? A sting operation? Should one of them risk it?

Trixie cut into the circle of bikestanders (bike bystanders) and lifted up the frame, walking away with it. “A-thank you,” they said, waddling the bike over to the Joint’s bouncer, Brick.

Brick Hamshunkle, who both looked and sounded like his name would imply, held up a rectangular hand and growled as Trixie approached.

“Eyy, c’mon, Roughhouse. We don’t want no trouble.”

Every single one of Trixie’s older siblings had been banned from the Joint during their school days. Broken windows, broken glasses, broken bones. By the time Trixie was old enough to attend, they had been added to the ban list on relation alone as a cautionary measure.

Phoenica Fleecity raised an empty can of bubble water in the air, then flopped down, splaying her lanky arms across the countertop. She had a single-digit number of hairs out of place, which for her was an emotional crisis. Trixie appeared at her side like a one-eyed emotional support whack-a-mole.

“Feenie, what’re ya doin’ here?”

“Hm? . . . Trixie?!” Phoenica jumped. She rubbed her own eyes and fixed her posture, embarrassed to be seen in this condition. “I thought—” She had enough wherewithal to lean down and whisper. “I thought you weren’t allowed?”

“I’m allowed,” they lied. “Why weren’t you answering texts?”

“Oh, my dear!” she flailed. “I’m in a state. Molly’s been absent from school for two whole days now! I don’t know where to deliver her homework. She’s been kidnapped by a miscreant, and I can’t stop thinking about her grades. It’s affecting my composure. I can barely sleep! And I . . . !” Phoenica looked left and right with conspiratorial mania in her eyes. “Can you keep a secret?”

“Ya.”

Phoenica dug one of her many identical cell phones out of her pockets and messily thumbed through her gallery. “We had a pop quiz today. A pop quiz! Ten questions. Math. Easy. And look. Look at this!” She pulled up a photo and shoved it in Trixie’s face. A photo of a test. It was blurry. Her hand was probably shaking when she took it. “I got two of the questions wrong. Two! That’s a ‘B’. Eighty percent! Or at least I think it is. But why should you believe me? The math fraud!” She slammed her fist on the table. “Bartender! No more of this cheap seltzer! I want a glass of milk!”

I did some checks to make sure the Indonesian language versions were inserted right which means EPs 2-7 are still processing. EP1's audio track is available and the subtitles are up on all episodes. Hopefully YouTube will finish processing these soon.

Want to listen to the dubs? Change the language in the settings! Both dubs have subtitles and song covers for the OP/ED. These dubs were announced in 2025. Unfortunately, we only gained the ability to add multiple audio tracks this month, so it's taken until now to put them on the original series!

Extremely excited to have found a little cameo role for my favorite useless newsie as a framing device newscaster in the Redwood Run novelization. She's in the TTRPG book and has shown up in scrapped projects and lost streams, but this will be her first official appearance.
