Whilst writing about trav(ailing) #earlymodern bodies all summer, I forgot to advertise that my latest article is out in the world. It’s about English travellers’ ahum stomach problems in the Levant (on brand, I knew, I think Kirsty Rolfe once called this draft ‘flux capacitor’…).
My old Einaudi edition from the late 90s has my notes and underlinings… 😢
Argh, I knew the second cup of coffee was a mistake today, as now feel nauseous and discombobulated (on the other hand, have revised a grant app and gotten help in revising its budget, AND finally cleaned the bathroom…and it’s only Tuesday!). Crashing soon though, I think…following Ned’s example.
Tested the AI mode on myself. There are some inaccuracies probably due to vagueness but it does get the main things right including the so called ‘Home Office Controversy.’ Theresa May might think she didn’t apologise to me though…
Incredibly thankful to all my 432 Green voters here in Littlehampton East. @chi-arungreenparty.bsky.social target here in Arun was in the Fontwell division, which we won from Reform with a nail biting 5 votes 🗳️ (this shows that every knock on the door counts!) congratulations 🥂 to Sue Wallsgrove!
#votegreen #hopenothate today! And have a lovely day!
More election content coming up: vote Green in Littlehampton town and Littlehampton East. Here are your @chi-arungreenparty.bsky.social candidates Anita and me!
There’s also a nod to #earlymodern history, and to Ned the bunny 🐰 #votegreen
Ok, elections content warning: if you live here in West Sussex or Littlehampton and want to vote for a #GreenParty county councillor, we now have most candidate profiles (including mine) up on the website: chichesterarun.greenparty.org.uk/west-sussex-...
Went to see the Boxgrove Priory church again today. It is so beautiful. #earlymodern #churchychurch
Today I wrote a bit of an article - and watched Barefoot in the Park (1967). Fonda and Redford so incredibly cute in this.
On my way back from Germany - from a #earlymodern mobility history workshop on a very delayed DB train to Amsterdam. Looking forward to crashing on my friend’s couch (at least this hasn’t been a coach or a carriage, rattling on the roads).
An excellent first day of Transient Communities and Spaces of Mobility: Theories, Methods, and Themes in #EarlyModern Mobilities History (at Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Delmenhorst, July 7-9, 2025). Tbh travelling by trains for 14hrs yesterday was a bit tough but definitely already worth it. 🗃️
Smellscapes, Smellscapes, Smellscapes (to the tune of Pulp: Mis-Shapes). @willtullett.bsky.social today at the @ihrscb.bsky.social Thanks Will! #earlymodern
Introductions are the trickiest to write…and because of this the most useful. Change my mind.
Am in Granada for the 35th SEDERI conference #earlymodern travails. So far excellent 👌 (and also some experiences of #hardacademiclife were, ahem, experienced.
What a privilege and joy to hear Kim Hall, Emma Smith and Brandi K. Adams speak at the SAA just now. #Shax25 #RenSA2025 #earlymodern
Claire Richie’s paper makes me crave for cheese 🧀 #earlymodern #RenSA2025
On my way to Virginia (and Jamestown)! Riding the Amtrak from Washington Union Station to Williamsburg. 🚉 #earlymodern research trip underway.
You and me both, LOC, you and me both. #earlymodern #skystorians #libraryofcongress
Btw, has anyone who is local to Boston done a list of restaurants like the legendary Leeds one by @earlymodernjohn.bsky.social over on the other site? #earlymodern
Apparently Trump administration does not allow the study of ‘women in society’…. Hufvudstadsbladet reports about them trying to meddle with Fulbright Finland grants….
And happy friend’s day to you all from John Smith! Thank you all for coming (online and in the flesh). Will have sooo much to think about. Thank you @crems-york.bsky.social and @emiliekmmurphy.bsky.social !!
Lectures on #earlymodern pain are done ✔️ Helsinki much greyer than on Monday though…rewarded myself last night with some blinis.
A snow day in Turku, mum is watching La Promesa, I am prepping teaching.
Teaching #earlymodern cultural history of pain (pain theory, surgery, medical ideas) in Helsinki today - the course is a joint effort of our Experiencing Agony-project. Even the sun showed up ☀️
What an incredible and productive week we have had at the @gladlib.bsky.social ! Loads of annotations achieved, a huge chunk of Introduction drafted. Still loads to do mind, but very happy already about the achievements of the ’eldest daughters editing club’.
Went to the Maison Française d’Oxford for the opening of the excellent ’Pain and the Physician, 16th-18th centuries exhibition. Great #earlymodern pain materials too! medecin-et-douleur-16e18e.huma-num.fr/en/throughou...
