Thoughtful Growth
Toronto-Danforth is growing rapidly. New housing and transit investments are essential, but growth must be planned alongside the services and infrastructure communities need to thrive. We cannot continue adding density without protecting parks, public spaces, schools, healthcare access, and the small businesses that give our neighbourhoods life and character.

In a post on the social media platform X, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon says the government will focus exclusively on "approved safety enhancements" for the airport and Toronto residents will have a say in future plans for the facility.

MacKinnon said the government received more than 87,000 responses to its consultation on the airport, which ended Friday.

About 87 per cent of respondents to the public survey were opposed to changes to the waterfront airport, said spokesperson Marie-Justine Torres on Saturday. She said about 80 per cent of the survey responses came from Toronto and another 15 per cent from the GTHA.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said at an unrelated event Saturday that while the province may have taken the land away from the city, the decision on what happens there falls with the federal government.

I do find it amusing that the proposed idea is basically "let's do DEI, but for conservative/anti-woke academics only"

My worry is that the talk of post-woke acts like a smokescreen — obscuring the many places where the generalization is untrue. It’s based much more on observations of what’s happening south of the border. The vibe shift definitely happened there. But in Canada — in universities — many are now doubling down on woke ideas precisely in reaction to what’s happening in the U.S.

The stakes could hardly be higher: a democracy without trusted sources of knowledge cannot govern itself wisely. And peer review, like democracy, only works when everyone has a voice.

All of this, though, depends on genuine viewpoint diversity amongst our expert peer reviewers. If only that were so.

Glad to see that a person being needlessly maimed and/or killed by a motor vehicle doesn't shock the conscience of the Editorial Board. No conscience needed if you just ignore the death part and keep pretending this is nothing more than a debate about "who the streets are for".

Justice Schabas also called the law “grossly disproportionate,” meaning that what he deemed the government’s end doesn’t justify its means, which will cause serious injury and death to cyclists. Yet the Supreme Court has said only extreme cases that would “shock the conscience” of Canadians are to be deemed grossly disproportionate. Does it shock the conscience to give some big downtown streets over to cars?

Governments may be right or wrong in their policy choices. (And as we’ve previously argued, we believe Mr. Ford was wrong to have meddled in city business.) But that’s what elections are for. Government is not run by “experts” or by courts, but by leaders accountable to the public. The problem here is a judge who refused to stay in his lane.

Breathtaking how weak this argument about purpose is. Claiming bike lane removals weren't arbitrary because the bill wasn't about fixing congestion, it was about "giving drivers priority"? Strange how they constantly tied bike lanes to gridlock and their removal to "getting drivers moving" then!

Too many drivers across Ontario are stuck in gridlock for hours every day and bike lanes are making things worse.

Next week, we’re introducing legislation that would require cities to get provincial approval for any new bike lanes that require removing a lane of traffic.

The Editorial Board believes Mr. Ford's purpose for Bill 212 was "to give car drivers the priority" and had nothing to do with congestion. It's just about who roads are for! That's of course why it was called the Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act.

Another difference is that Section 7 – to quote the Supreme Court – is about the basic values that undergird the Charter. Justice Schabas called the removal of the bike lanes “arbitrary,” because traffic experts said it would not reduce congestion. When the government argued in court that “four lanes are better than two,” the experts countered that four lanes would merely increase demand.

But is that really arbitrary? Clearly, Mr. Ford’s purpose was to give car drivers the priority on certain main arteries. That traffic congestion is improved by deterring cars and encouraging cycling doesn’t contradict the Ontario government’s point that these roads should be for car drivers.

here's an exciting idea: a new, lower tier of humanity reserved just for cyclists women, drug users, sex workers, cyclists, one of these things is not like the other!

Consider the Supreme Court ruling striking down the criminal law on abortion. That law required women seeking a legal abortion to obtain permission from a hospital committee, an unwieldy procedure at odds with the law’s stated purpose, of protecting women’s health.

Other cases since then have followed a similar principle. In 2011, the Supreme Court said the federal government could not shut down a nurse-supervised clinic for illegal drug users in Vancouver, because doing so would kill sick people. In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down the criminal law on prostitution, saying it relegated sex workers to the back streets where they were being murdered.

Ask yourself which one of these subjects is not like the others: women seeking an abortion; drug users obtaining life-saving help; sex workers trying to stay alive – or bike riders looking for a protected lane?

The scale of this 2050 plan is truly immense. Ontario gov’t is fully nuclear pilled. To pull it off will require: - Brand new station in Port Hope with 8 units - Expanding Bruce with 4 new units (12 total at the site) - Refurbishing most of the existing fleet (some of that is already underway)

Planning for New Nuclear Energy
OPG, Bruce Power and the IESO have confirmed that the deployment of up to 17,800 MW of new nuclear in the province by 2050 is feasible, to power economic growth and electrification of Ontario's economy.

Achieving the capacity target in this scenario would require building at minimum the equivalent of eight large nuclear units or 8,000 MW (in addition to the four units already planned at Bruce C) and potential life extension of Bruce Units 1 and 2. In order to deliver on that level of build out Ontario's nuclear operators and the IESO concluded that the Province would be required to utilize OPG-owned generation sites such as Wesleyville and emphasized that early engagement and assessment work, such as the public and Indigenous engagement that launched in Port Hope earlier this year, is essential to being able to deliver additional new large scale nuclear builds.
