Zy goaded me into doing that video game meme that's floating around, so here we are, showing my whole ass with this.
You know what, why not? Have fun if you choose to use this one; original art credited to @likeshine.bsky.social
Just out of curiosity, where does Octodad fall on the side of this whole debacle? Look at this man and his upright nuclear family. Do you really wanna rip this loving, caring couple apart? Take their children from a perfectly normal father merely because he lacks compliant knees?!
If you see this, post a dragon. I believe yourself counts; look deep within, Clarice.
I think I played Parasite Eve more than FF7; I spent a lot of time with this game, and climbed the Chrysler Building on two separate saves. Was absolutely enthralled with the story, and the survival-horror elements combined with turn-based jRPG gameplay drew me in something fierce.
Perfectly normal, perfectly fine, perfectly cute game about a regular dolphin that in no way, shape, or form will exacerbate even the vaguest degree of thalassophobia, suffocation, or cosmic terror.
Not as polished as other 'cozy' farming simulators, but just interesting enough (and certainly morbid enough) to hold my attention long-term, Graveyard Keeper has a surprisingly deep story and a definitive ending, unexpected for this type of game.
Had to debate with myself about whether my preference was towards the first or second game, but ultimately, Axiom Verge 2 wins out. The gameplay variety and novel approach to defeating, disabling, or co-opting enemies eclipses the first, and Indra's story reveals as much as it opens to inquiry.
Link's Awakening was grand (if tongue-in-cheek) adventure and bittersweet tale both, impeded only by the longevity of four AA batteries.
Without question, the first MMX game is my favorite in the series overall. Peerless gameplay, an array of near-universally useful secondary weapons, and decent difficulty makes this my go-to when I want to kill time with a yesteryear platformer.
Many, many years ago @skyshadow.bsky.social came down for a visit and brought a little game he was fascinated with for me to try out: Mass Effect. When he asked me the following morning if I'd stayed awake all night playing it (which I had), I only replied with "Commander Shepard needs me!"
NieR: Automata, another game that @ryannktsu.bsky.social recommended I play. This turned out to be a much more profound experience than I would've thought when I first sat down with it; who knew a shmup minigame credits sequence would have me sobbing uncontrollably, once all was said and done?
On the subject of older games that ate up an inordinate amount of my time when I was young, Tetris probably takes the cake. I know I could lose hours upon hours to this game even today, and there is a freely-accessible version available, with a twist, here: firstpersontetris.com
Like many I lost myself in the three Spyro games made by Insomniac before the IP was turned over to Universal. The Reignited versions did the originals justice, and I can still run around the world of Spyro 2 especially just enjoying being a little purple dragon for a spell. I still dislike Hunter.
Based in part on the War of the Roses, FFT featured one of the most involved narratives of any tactical RPG I ever played. The story later influenced large swathes of FF14's narrative, and completing Pandaemonium Savage was especially a personal endeavor for me on account of my love of FFT.
I played a fair number of RTS games when I was young, and have fond memories of playing AoE II (Age of Kings) over LAN multiplayer with a friend from my HS creative writing class at her house after school. Few captured my attention like the Age series, and I still play the HD version now and then.
I've played most of the games in this series and greatly enjoyed them all, but I keep coming back to the SNES version of Secret of Mana, despite learning later in life how much of the game was left on the cutting room floor owing to the fiasco between Nintendo and Sony when the PSX was a peripheral.
Then there's Inscryption. How about a nice game of cards?
And speaking further of birds, should you desire to reap souls, wield a blade, and do it all as an adorable little crow, then Death's Door is up your alley.
Would you like to experience the full spectrum of human emotion; to recall a time when your life was filled with child-like wonder, all without a single word once being said? Then play Bird Story.
While generally a fan of the Homeworld franchise, Cataclysm stole the show for me. There is a human quality to the characters sorely lacking in the preceding and succeeding games, and kiith Somtaaw's desperate battle against the Beast is the stuff of legend.
This will be incredibly shallow of me to admit since I'm usually not a stickler for graphics but the overly-boxy style of Minecraft never appealed, and so I avoided it entirely. I had serious hesitation when @ryannktsu.bsky.social recommended Vintage Story, but it is a fast favorite.
Dredge is a -perfectly normal fishing game- and if you'd like to experience -perfectly normal fishing- then I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy and engage in long days (and longer nights) -perfectly fishing perfect fish.-
Another jRPG series that did not survive the transition to the contemporary era, Breath of Fire 3 is the most stand-out in the series to me both for the story and the gameplay. The fishing, impeccable; the dragon gene transformations, incredible; the final battle with ancient evil; cathartic.
Seems an obvious one, but the only thing I will say about SDV is that I would very much like to live there, and would so if I could in a heartbeat.
AM2R is a fan-made remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus, and it is more-or-less largely faithful to the original while also including some elements that nod towards later entries in the official series. It retains the same atmospheric isolation and dread that made the GB game what it was.
