Next three chapters are out! Previously, on "The Tempest World Tour"...

My phone beeped loudly, insistently. Without opening my eyes, I reached out for it, my hand flailing on the nightstand until I found it, and pressed a button. It went silent. Ali groaned next to me and I turned back around to hold her again, pulling the covers up over her exposed shoulder. She lay on her side, facing away from me, holding the arm I had wrapped around her.

My cheek was against her hair. She still smelled faintly of perfume from the night before, and something else… vanilla. Maybe from lotion of some sort. Her head lay on a corner of the pillow with my arm under it, extended past her. One of her arms was out as well, and our hands touched. I smiled. It was over for me. I was dead, and this was the afterlife, my own personal heaven. My life was over. But in this moment, I didn't care. I was laying next to the woman I loved.

I sighed softly. Not that I could ever say it out loud. We'd only known each other for a few months, and the time we'd spent together had been under extraordinary circumstances, a crazy whirlwind of an adventure that would never happen like this again. Of course I was in love, who wouldn't be, in my place?

Why you wanna know, chica, hmmm?

Ali smiled up at me. “Thank you. And you clean up well, too. I don’t get to see you out of uniform very often.”

“Listen, if Alison invites me to a party, I’m gonna try to look my best.” She nodded and sighed contentedly, then looked up at the night sky. I looked up with her. There weren’t many stars out, or rather, it was hard to see them beyond the ambient glow of the city’s lights. Still, a few twinkled here and there above us.

“This is… no, nevermind,” she began. “Forget it.”

“Forget what?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know. This is going to sound…” She sighed and stomped her feet lightly, then shook her head again.

“Now you have to tell me,” I said. “This is too interesting to ignore.”

“Mm, no.”

“Please?”

She glanced up at me, annoyed, then looked down at the water of the pool with a frown, lit dimly from below the surface by small lights on either side. “Well… have you had any ‘luck’? Between shows?”

Ali was laughing so hard that she had tears in her eyes, and she had to set her glass of white wine down for a moment to wipe them. “You all are too much, I swear.”

Jessica picked up Ali’s glass and handed it back to her. “What about you, hm? You had any luck in between shows?”

Alison’s eyes widened for just a moment before she forced a laugh. “Yeah, with all my free time.” She shook her head and took a drink.

Jean leaned over the couch they were standing behind. “Girl, you need to make time. Six months is a long while, you’ll go mental otherwise!” A few of the dancers agreed, and even Aaron nodded his head. I thought I saw Helena shoot me a knowing look, and decided now would be a good time to finish my beer.

“I, uh…” she stammered, and I realized she was more than a little uncomfortable.

Speaking up quickly, without thinking, I found myself saying, “Oh come on, there’s no way. Could you imagine the tabloids?”

I love backstages. I love "employee only" doors. I love knowing what happens behind the scenes. I never want to work there long, I just want a glimpse, I want to see what that world looks like, just for a little while. I want to know how things work. Writing lets me explore that.

Now that the show was nearly over, it seemed that a few had hung around to chat with the stage manager, who was promising them a glimpse of the singer as she came off the stage. My blood boiled at this, but there wasn't much I could do without making a scene. I looked over at Lee, who seemed to have heard the same thing, because he rolled his eyes and shook his head. We weren't going to let that happen.

The show ended and Ali came off stage, exhilarated and glowing. She saw me and smiled, but grew serious when she saw the look on my face. After speaking to a few of her dancers, she came up to me and asked, “What's up?”

“Nothing big, but there's another situation with extra people back here. We're gonna handle it and get you out of here on time though, I promise.” She nodded and looked around, still catching her breath, and I leaned in to ask her quietly, “Do you wanna hang out in your dressing room until we get this sorted out? It won't be long.”

She looked up at me through her eyelashes and squeezed my arm without a word, then walked past me towards her dressing room. I allowed myself a moment to bite my lip, then shook my head to clear it, and approached the stage manager.

Lrp, it's the first night of the tour and I can't sleep lol. Posts just keep rolling in on the other site and there's so many that mirror scenes I wrote months ago.

When Marcus arrived in the morning, he was surprised to see me, expecting Lee. I explained that we’d had a late night coming back from the club, and he nodded without asking anything further. I left the hotel suite and went downstairs to call a cab to my hostel a few blocks away.

Once there, I sat in the common area of the hostel for a while before taking the stairs up to my room. Still exhausted, I quickly changed and flopped onto the bed, expecting to fall asleep any moment. Yet within minutes, my phone was out, and I was scrolling through various social media apps, looking for mention of Ali’s show or her club appearance. Already, a few local sites had published reviews of the show. “High energy performance… astounded fans with her return to the Windy City… singular talent with vocals and visuals…” I scrolled and searched some more, unsatisfied. Blog posts with pictures of her onstage, a shaky Youtube video that mostly consisted of a young man screaming into his own camera, “This is the best concert of my ENTIRE! LIFE!” Twitter posts about the show… here they were, some posts about her club appearance. I searched her hashtag and found newer ones, some uploaded as recently as this morning. Pictures of her walking into the club, getting carded… and a single picture of her hair as seen from the dance floor. Nothing else.

Sort of a "been getting into yogurt lately" type of post, but I went tree shopping today. Turns out, replacing our birch tree won't be nearly as expensive as I thought. The poor thing lost most of its leaves a few years ago and has been limping on ever since.

“Really? I would, in a minute. Maybe after the tour, I’ll see if there’s any open assignments here. You know the agency has a field office here, right?”

I looked over at him. “I didn’t, actually. I only ever worked out of the Chicago branch.”

“Yeah, man. Come on, what are you doing after this? We should check it out, see what’s up on the west coast!” His energy was contagious, and I found myself considering it. I still hadn’t given much thought to what I would do after the tour. I sighed. I didn’t want to think about it, not yet.

“Honestly, it’s not a bad idea.” I thought about it until the light turned green again, and I took my foot off the brake.

Edwin’s phone buzzed, and there was a flash of light and a loud screech to my left. My window exploded. The side of the car crunched loudly, and there was another explosive sound as the side and front airbags went off, knocking my arm into my own head, which was flung back into my headrest. My legs slammed into each other and my knees hit the center console painfully. My seatbelt had locked immediately, and I could feel it restraining my body weight around my waist, shoulder, and chest. The entire car spun to the side and then stopped, rocking one way, then the other as it settled.
