Creative hyphenate in Brooklyn who reads too many books and sifts through discount store items to find new sounds to record. Decent backgammon player. Friend to weirdos. Haters and MAGA types will be blocked.
The view from 1965. There once was such job abundance that there were three times as many jobs as graduating undergrads. This is how far America has plummeted. Source: www.nytimes.com/1965/03/28/a... (H/t @dygottlieb.bsky.social)
Just finished this. This is the third (and most recent: he's working on the fourth) volume of Simon Callow's bio of Orson Welles. Callow is detailed, affectionate, and honest about this great genius, a victim of Hollywood and his own excesses. I strongly recommend the full set for any film geek.
Ha! Patrick McGoohan pretty much told Orson Welles, "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered "
I hope we all return here on September 13th to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the first episode of Scooby-Doo. As far as I'm concerned, this should be a national holiday!
Who knew Ira Glass's Wikipedia entry so closely resembled a Stefan Zweig story?
Tonight's dinner at the house: broccoli salad, fresh corn bread, and chilli (presently simmering). I also made homemade guacamole for a bald man deluxe nachos appetizer (scrarfed down in record time) and I am about to make margaritas.
Caturday. Here's one of the two cats falling asleep on me the other night. And when that happens, of course, you dare not move. She is known for her purrs of approval and grumpiness. Very sensitive, but she's a sweet cat.
This may be one of the most narcissistic letters I've ever read. Fuck Graham Platner. I hope this is the last we hear from him, but sadly it probably isn't
The rest of you are only JUST learning about the debauchery-filled NYPL afterparty?
Hey Ryan. Do the world a favor and walk in front of a bus, you loathsome misogynistic piece of shit. Your mother should have aborted you. Hell, maybe you and the equally evil Jesse Watters can stab each other to death in an arena, solving two problems.
You also took a big steaming dump on SA survivors and have yet to backtrack and apologize for this statement. I've loved your work for decades, but I believe women and will be boycotting your work (right as I was about to pre-order THE TALISMAN 3) until you issue an apology.
Future historians will look at this video in much the same way that they look at the Dukakis tank photo. Mallory McMorrow has just suspended her campaign, paving the way for a progressive victory in the Michigan Semate primary.
And how did the most despised film blogger in America spend his Fourth? Oh. Ohhhhh. Uh, wellness check anyone? Nah. Ask Scott Galloway. Cc: @glennkenny.bsky.social
The Sagamore Cafeteria, open all night in the 1950s. Once located at St. Mark's and Third. Second photograph by Robert Frank. Jack Kerouac called this place "the respectable bums' cafeteria." Venue for penny-ante drug dealers, the destitute, and second story men.
Sure enough, a liberal who distorts my points and immediately accuses me of promoting bad faith antisemitism. Perfect example of the DNC grifter offering lies and prevarication rather than acknowledging reality. I can't have a conversation with someone like this.
The books I read in June. Very Beat heavy. (I've been working on a long Kerouac essay!)
Announcing their new world tour: The Most Soulless and Least Funniest Men in Comedy!
I am trying to leave a bit of open space in the bookcases because one of the cats really likes hanging out with the books.
Jack Kerouac met William Gaddis and didn't like him. (Gaddis can be found in THE SUBTERRANEANS as Harold Sand.)
Ha! This is an exquisite and classic Vollmann burn of James Ellroy. Ellroy is surely one of the most overrated writers of all time. His work will definitely not be talked about as fervidly as Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald (or, for that matter, Goodis, Himes, Mosley, Westlake, and Highsmith).
A 1,300 page book on capitalism? Sure, why not? I'm on board for Vollmann and Mieville later in the year. May have to pick up SCHATTENFROH as well. Where are the other doorstopper readers on BlueSky? 🤣🤣
🚨CONCERT UPDATE🚨The band who played at the Halloween party in which Thana shoots all the men in MS. 45 has backed out of the Freedom 250 concert series.
One of my writing assistants was deeply helpful (and very protective!) today on the World War I flashback.
This fell out of an old book. A witty woman with great legs whom I dated two decades ago. She sent me these arty photos in the mail. This was pre-smartphone. I'd get the package and then she'd quiz me on the phone about where these places were. Sadly she moved and we lost touch. But good times.
