In a favorite cartoon themed plastic bowl, on a bed of white rice drenched in reduced honeyed-garlic steak broth rest 7 olive green colored, slug-shaped, cinnamon-honey-sweetened, stewed figs. Carl would definitely fight Mongo for these. Yummm.

OMG! The Rising Sun of Wild-Fires Summer right out of my commute yesterday:

Looking across the highway gaurdrail at the stark trees in shadow left and right, through the marsh of Sauvie Island, to a fiery red sun rising over a smoke shrowded crest of fir trees, the morning sky is ominously muted in red and orange haze from all the wildfires out east.

Walking in the fire-smog and we cannot even see across the valley to the mountains. But the flowers at our feet are still spectacular:

From the top of an urban hill looking down a slope with a few parked cars and nice framing trees fading through rows of city trees until the grey hazy cloudless sky swallows everything - we should be able to see Mounts St Helens and Adams out there today as well as the Cascade foothills ridgeline, but nope: grey fire-smog.

Thornless blackberries are just coming on in the garden, other berries are retiring in disgrace.

Cluster of four ripe blackberries hanging amongst heat-stressed, jagged edged, iconic leaves of the vine, but mercifully there are no thorns.

Whoah! The same cluster of four blackberries now appear next to the farmer's wife's not-so-green thumb. And the blackberries dwarf the digit spectacularly! Thumb was only added for comparison, so to compare: The forefront berry is slightly larger than thumb from tip to below first knuckle, and half again as wide. The farmer's wife also thinks the berries taste better.

Made the monthly trip to the mountain spring for water, so refreshing under the shade of the dripping moss when all around is bright summer heat.

Sword ferns in the foreground obscure a narrow dirt path going straight up a hillside into dense green foliage past the twinned trunk of a mossy alder.

Sunlight on the mossy bark of a long dead oak lights the way to a rock and twig strewn path along the creek, scrubby alders, maples, ferns and nettles crowd out the light and make for a cooling if ticklish short walk.

Moss was out in drips on Wildwood Trail in Forest Park, Portland, Or, for us.

On Wildwood Trail in Forest Park in Portland, Oregon, the moss covers everything that stands still, including this 30 foot tall snag standing as a trailside sentinel and glowering over passersby with a mouth carved by woodpeckers and eyes and nose of broken branch stubs.

Comfort food, but it takes so long!

Soot sprites and forest spirits (rice balls) watch over half a table of serving dishes with gyoza, pork rolls, daikon patties, veggie flowers, tamagoyaki, pickled veg, spring salad rolls, homemade peanut sauce.

Pork and nori rolls, daikon and leek patties, baked pork gyoza wrapped with nori on a blue, oblong, cafe plate

16 pork gyoza in a stainless sauce pan, almost done, almost time, mouth is drooling...

5 of 10 spring salad rolls with shrimp, tofu, carrot, zucchini, basil, lettuce, and glass noodles.

We greet these trees regularly on our long dogwalks in some of our favorite parks.

Years of pruning away from the street make it look like this tree is adverse to the gentrification it has witnessed grow up all around the park in Longview, WA as all the branches and even the thick trunk lean left.

Waiting paitiently for afternoon snack. I think she secretly wishes we'd wash the dog's nose prints off the sliding glass door. But I can still see through to the blooming Spring flowers, and she hasn't missed a tuna treat yet. 🤷‍♂️

A prolific spring above a gravel road shoots out of a 4 inch metal pipe from a concrete box that has capped and contained its flow from erosion and contamination for over 50 years. Locals all know how pure and constant this supply is.

Industry quietly breaches every vista.

A lone duck perches on a piling at the edge of a grassy strip overlooking the glassy Columbia River, dominating the serene vista is a giant, grey container ship quietly moving upriver. The far Washington shore is rusty with fall colors, but the poor duck can't see it because of that huge ship. Well, there's still the glorious pale blue sky stretching on forever to comfort our lone Oregon duck.
