66. Thrifting for Evil A bloody, chaotic, messy whirlwind of a story. A sentient and evil cat-skull doll thing, and the revolving door of corpses that follows its arrival, plus a panicky, babbling, terrified mess of a narrator.
Continuing my tradition of finishing a project and then frantically switching between half a dozen others for a half year before (hopefully) settling on one. This most recent existential crisis has landed me back on The Castle Guard.
65. A natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent A very charming story. Very grounded No fantastical elements except dragons. It's very similar to Saxon Stories (The Last Kingdom) but following a scholarly aristocratic woman rather than a warrior man. Travel, various cultures/languages...
64. Titanic Hard to capture my feelings in such a small space. I wish I could have come out on a higher note. Parts are beautiful and brilliant, but parts are extremely frustrating. It tries WAY too hard sometimes and ends up feeling cartoonish as a result. Plus the end is embarrassingly sappy.
I'm writing again. I've been so detached from all my creative works, I figured it's best just to start from scratch. Not like I have much at all to make up. Kidnapped Princess WIP starts anew.
63. Hush One of those movies where I love ~90% of it and HATE the other ~10%. If I could go in and hard cut a couple scenes, it'd be perfect. Fortunately those few minutes happen consecutively about 70% through, so before and after that, the movie built and then re-built good will with me.
#FantasyIndiesJune day 30: Monthly wrap-up Not a whole ton to say. I got decent progress on The Comet of Satyros at the start of the month but have done almost nothing the last 2-3 weeks. I feel myself pulled between numerous projects, with no idea which one I should focus on.
62. Don't Breathe It's kind of awful, which is a shame because most of it is fun if you don't think even remotely critically. But I was plain frustrated by the end. Logic stopped existing, and the movie just DIDN'T END. It's only ~an hour and a half but has like 7 points it could/should have ended.
61. Dark Lord of Derkholm I'm almost offended at how charming this is. The dialogue/character mannerisms are so *right* it's incredibly impressive. The magic feels so wide and expansive, yet lived-in and almost comfortable. I didn't personally care much about the plot except as a bit of a novelty.
60. You're Next It takes a while for this movie to kick into gear (like, the last 30 minutes), which is a shame because it's really good once it gets to that point. But the rest of the movie suffers from a big cast that doesn't have a single interesting character, and bad, drawn-out jokes.
59. Fall If you're able to suspend your disbelief, this is a very fun stuck-in-a-horrible-scenario movie. I think it goes on a little long and the ending *SPOILERS* [is too happy and ignores logical proceedings too much] *SPOILERS*, but I otherwise enjoyed it a good deal.
58. The Glass House This does a great job at showing the helplessness of being a child. Very frustrating film - in good, meaningful ways - in SO many ways. It also strikes many personal cords, me having spent a childhood among drug-addict, physically- and verbally-abusive, manipulative "guardians"
My ever-ongoing map for Captured Princess WIP. Story's been neglected for a while, but working on this has me badly wanting to get back to it. I specifically designed the world to be a playground of fun fantasy-isms. Maybe that's just what I need right now to get out of this rut.
57. The House on Haunted Hill (1999) It's a campy, schlocky, edgy mess, and it's a lot of fun. The characters don't have much to them, there isn't much of a story, the final act frankly sucks. But it's undeniably charming anyway.
56. Brick (2025) A decent enough movie. There are a fair number of things I like. I do feel it failed to live up to its potential and has a few contrived scenes, but I don't think it was ever totally egregious. It feels kind of like a movie-length Twilight Zone episode, which is neat.
55. The Blair Witch Project There's a lot about it that I appreciate, both for the influence it had almost 3 decades ago and the narrative/acting merit it has today. Buuut, it feels incredibly one-note. I wish either it was shorter or had *any* variation in the "encounters" the characters have.
54. Flowers in the Attic (2014) One of those movies that's kinda terrible but is really close to be fantastic. The subject matter is disturbing but checks so many boxes that make it morbidly fascinating to me. Apparently there's a book AND a 1987 film version, both of which interest me now, lol.
#FantasyIndiesJune day 21: Family in WIP Pravic's father is mildly disgusted at his existence, as are Pravic's older brother and sister. His younger sister isn't, but Pravic pre-emptively distanced himself from her to avoid the pain of her "inevitably" turning on him.
53. The Amazing Digital Circus I overall like it, but throughout the entire thing I've had this nagging feeling that there's something missing. I did like the final episode, but it didn't dispel that insubstantial feeling. Even at the credits, my thoughts were, "Hmm. That was fun, but that's it?"

52. Sol Cesto I'm haven't "beaten" it, but I think I've gotten as much out of it as I care to. It's a roguelike that lost my interest after like 3 hours. What more can I say?
I owe this book a lot. It started as a short story in an anthology created with other #writingcommunity authors when I was new to the scene. I later gave it a second life as an expanded standalone. Without it and the opportunities and connections it gave me, I probably wouldn't still be writing!
#FantasyIndiesJune day 14: Do you like maps in your books? You could say that I usually show off my world maps, but I've done that a million times, plus I haven't updated them in ages, so you've all probably seen them in their present states. So here are more small-scale locales
51. The Thing (1982) Yep, this is a Certified Banger. Very, very solid movie. This is probably one of those "every should see this at least once in their lifetime" films.
I "won" my first ever run of Slay the Spire II! (scripted death at the end, curse ye meta progression). This happened in STS I, also. I beat my first 2 runs, one each with Ironclad and Silent, before getting utterly ruined as Defect for hours straight. I'll enjoy my 100% winrate while it lasts 💅
