Went to Hurst Book awards earlier this week. Something of a whirlwind - Jack MacKay's excellent Gloam won, but, as an also ran, I got my own, very own, Chris Riddell drawings. He drew us all thought the ceremony, and here they are. Such a good day!

My mother took this exam at Cambridge in 1946, she was 20. She was in the first group of female university students to be tested to the same standard as their male cohort. These exams were to see if they were up to standard. Did the women know enough about dead white men? Seems they did.

A small chunk in and am so far loving this. Although I'm sure it's heading for tragedy, so far it's tender and funny. The language is beautiful, and it slips down.

Couple of books I would massively recommend, The Secret of Wild Hill, Lottie's Dream by Olivia Tuffin 8 + and Animagicals by Paula Harrison 6 + both published by @nosycrow.bsky.social Both very accessible and enjoyable, satisfying reads.
