Sada turned away from the wall. She was met with Titus’ face. She startled and flushed red. Her heart roared to life from the abrupt, unexpected encounter. He was fast asleep, his breathing slow and deep. His dark hair was scattered around their pillow and one arm was over his head while the other rested on his chest. She’d forgotten they were sharing the tiny room and the matching bed.

Not that that bothered her. Titus was respectable enough. She hadn’t caught him gawking at her, nor had he touched her while they were alone in his bed back in the small house. He was simply sleeping. She was the one on the precipice of lascivious thoughts constantly when she was alone with the man. He was cute, his voice was velvety and warm, and she could not stop admiring his lithe body.

She considered excusing herself to the washroom to alleviate herself from the lascivious thoughts. Sada lifted the blanket and peeked at his abdomen, then lower. A

Titus ignored the bows trained on him with arrows nocked as they were a negligible problem. He held up the mace with one hand, its ball was shiny silver, the staff being impenetrable black, and if he hadn’t witnessed the monster drop the item after its death, he would have believed it to be an ordinary blunt weapon. Luckily, he matched the mark of this divine item, and twice as much fortune followed with him discovering the item’s use. Titus was ready for the chaotic fight he stumbled onto, and unfortunately for the seven highwaymen, they were in his path home.
Their leader, a burly red-haired man spattered with freckles, offered an exchange of goods and services. His money or divine artifacts—or other valuables—for his life.
Titus never answered them. These highwaymen were common thieves driven by greed. If they were thieves like him, they’d have let their own kind pass without incident. There was honor among the knockers of the world, but the amount varied from soul to soul. He assessed what he had happened upon on his trip home. There was a carriage there, the horses were slain by arrows, and the guards had traded blows with the brigands, even taking a few of their lives before their own untimely end. Bound with rope and standing like a pet on a leash beside the redhead was a woman wearing gorgeous, sleek clothes.
“What’s it going to be?” the bandit leader asked. His voice echoed through the valley between crags.
“I’ll take my chances killing the seven of you,” came Titus’ nonchalant answer. He swallowed a mouthful of anxiety then whispered, “Kasei protect me.” His call to the god of war was a habit when he was in a confrontation. He kept his face neutral while the twang of bows being drawn back echoed through the otherwise silent area.
“You heard the man! He has a death wish. Let us help you out with that,” the redhead barked, then he pointed at Titus. Arrows zipped through the air, all of them seeking Titus’ body.

Evette felt her embarrassment intensify. She chugged the rest of her wine and then sighed. She hoped the alcohol would kick in and give her the liquid courage to not be embarrassed about the thoughts she had pieced together about Sebastian’s life. “You’re this great, hands-on father. Your kids are homeschooled with the best tutors. They never want for anything, and you spend time with them and dote on them.” To her surprise she wasn’t just slurring, the wine was numbing her sense of shame. “You’re incredibly hot with a great body, you’re a magister who lives in a damn castle, and she cheated on you and wanted out of the marriage. I-I can’t wrap my head around all of that. I mean…yeah, I’m not married to you, but you’ve been generous since we met. You’re amazing and…” she dared a look at Sebastian. He was surprised and embarrassed from what she could tell with her foggy, off-kilter mind.

Sebastian started to speak but stammered incoherently. He dropped down from the stool, then approached Evette. Neither of them had spoken in an eternity. His son’s taunting text flashed through his mind. It was possible that Gideon had observed something between them that he didn’t realize was there, or that Evette had confided in him. toward the baron. With him on top of her, all of his heavy muscle, she remembered the arduous thoughts that trickled into her head while she watched him practice archery. Why was that coming to mind now, right as their lips barely touched?

Burne surrendered to the irony of his life. He had been trying to get his mind off the relentless teasing he had experienced since word of her magical kiss made its way through the castle. Now they were kissing because he somehow always crossed paths with Kasinda, even when he sought to avoid her. He had ventured to the top floor to search for valuables he could use to pay for more staff, and because he had assumed she’d be with Imogen and Madeline. If he moved slightly backward, the moment would end, but with his back and forth luck as of late, one of them would end up injured. He wanted to inch forward more than anything. He wanted their lips pressed together firmly. Or her lips parted by his tongue, her moans muffled as he shifted his weight onto her.
