I can see why the X-men got so popular. Everything is always so "heavy". It's like writing a story centered around persecuted minorities, except the people in this minority group have really cool special powers and fancy costumes. It would be extremely political/controversial if it wasn't about a group that doesn't exist in real life. I don't think, "The Uncanny Black-Men" or the "The Amazing Hispanic-Men" would have sold half as well. Not because their story isn't as compelling, but because it would get up in people's (prejudicial) feelings. I'm just saying that Lee & Kirby may have known this from the beginning and if they didn't Claremont definitely did.

As for this specific story, it was dark with some interesting twists, but ended rather abruptly without much closure.

This came off as an independent 1990's comic. That's not a compliment. I'm not saying that all 90's independent comics were bad, but there was plenty of sub-par stuff out there. The characters felt like clunky caricatures, writing was ok, plot wasn't very exciting. 2 out of 5 * #comics #marvel

Even though I grew up playing D&D in the late 70's I'm not an "old-school" guy, but I did appreciate the flavor and I liked the art in this because I am an "old-school" art guy (and a new-school art guy, or just pretty much an art guy). There were tons of cool ideas and a crazy setting to play in or steal from for your own campaign. The only problem I had with it was that much of the stuff would need to be fleshed out - the monsters, the magic items, the plot hooks and the encounters were all just the basic ideas with not enough detail included to just use them as is.
