Tomorrow I'll be posting details of the 25% off prepublication offer from Waterstones booksellers for my new book, PARDONS: Discretionary Mercy and the Rule of Law in Britain and America, 1066-2026. Until then, here are some of the generous assessments of the work I've been honored to receive.
Delighted to announce that from July 21-24, Waterstone's booksellers will be offering a pre-publication 25% off promotion for my book on pardons. Will post details on Tuesday.
The funniest thing about Trump on proper forest maintenance is that we can be reasonably sure that Trump himself has never actually been IN an actual forest, at least on foot. A purely east coast urban creature. And never a pedestrian even there. As Bugs Bunny was wont to say, "What a maroon."
Terrific, if true. Trump is losing the one genuine talent he ever had - an instinct for giving an audience what it wants. A flying violation of foreign emoluments clause, a long boring speech pushing fireworks so late that few will stay up to watch. A ratings loser. Bless his heart.
Delighted to see the cover of my new book on the pardon power. Out from Cambridge Univ Press in November.
"Total systemic friction on the cartels." Translation: We just executed two people without charges or a trial. Do these people think elliptical bureaucratese will change the law of armed conflict or immunize them from prosecution?
See my upcoming book: "Pardons: Discretionary Clemency and the Rule of Law in Britain and America 1066-2026" (Cambridge U Press) in which I, sadly, conclude that constitution should be amended to abolish or severely limit presidential pardon power.
He thinks this is some architectural masterwork. Begod. It's mid-size midwestern city convention center with crown molding.
1) US const says POTUS has power to grant "Reprieves & Pardons for Offences against the United States." This means federal, not state, crimes. This has never been contested. 2)Trump's claim to do something he cannot do shows either he gets no legal advice or is further evidence that he's delusional.
King Lear: I will have such revenges on you ..., That all the world shall—I will do such things— What they are, yet I know not, but they shall be The terrors of the earth!”
A completely empty threat. Neither he nor any federal official has any jurisdiction in the case. And any Colorado official who rolled over for this would be politically dead from that moment forward.
1) Never listen to congressman who IDs as Dr So-and-so. Anyone who thinks MD is more exalted title than Senator is a fool. 2) But MD makes idiocy of these comments worse. Risk pools including non-sick people makes whole system solvent. 3) I guess fire insurance is rip-off cuz most houses don't burn.
Despite the grotesque narcissism, he's not entirely wrong on point one. And it should terrify Republicans, including heirs apparent Vance & Rubio. The MAGA phenomenon is, I think, centered on Trump as a personality. Remove his weird gravitational pull & I doubt anyone else can hold it together.
Please, please, please let this be true. And let the lackeys comply. Nixon redux here we come!
1/2 Note jurists doing this are immigration judges - administrative law judges employed directly by executive branch - not Article III judges w/ life tenure. I wrote abt danger to rule of law posed by Trump's assertion earlier this year of supremacy over these judges. See link in next post.
This seems right. We really do live in separate worlds. And it's why when I hear Dems talk about importance of "messaging" in reaching voters who went for Trump (or Rs genrly) last time, I'm skeptical. I suspect only real-world impacts -ON THEM or their friends- of T's bad policy might penetrate.
Intimate portrait of the mating practices of the House and Senate Republican caucuses.
Activist left outrage re Tapper book is ridiculous. Biden, tho good POTUS, was too old to run again. His people tried to minimize his decline. Details of that effort are news. Which it is media's job to report. Whether left likes it or not. One can accept unpleasant truths AND fight Trump .
Perhaps one could run this through GoogleTranslate and figure out what it means...
Gillibrand...Gillibrand Isn't she the one who ran that nice fella Al Franken out of the Senate over some dumb jokes? Nah. Couldn't be the same person. The hypocrisy would be too great.
This doesn't capture size of crowd. But at least several thousand folks showed up for Hands Off rally in my little town of Durango, CO, population 17,000. Certainly largest political gathering here in my memory.
