Did I ever score today! A huge bag of purple/sweet onions + apples for $2 a bag - still decent quality for best before. 🇨🇦 Radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, and clementines from South Africa. Total cost $13.75 😊 Made a batch of fridge pickled onions. The apples I will make applesauce. #ontario
Today's harvest, at least i don't need to worry about a parasite and explosive diarrhea. Orange haze and smokey smell today from wildfires in Northern Ontario. What's this world coming too! No response from the premier as he's too busy robbing us blind!
Hot and humid again and will last till Thursday. The deer flies are now out and mosquitos are still awful! I'm not enjoying this Summer and looking forward to Winter...never thought I would ever say that...EVER! Pictures from today while running from bugs!! Can't go outside without spray and mesh.
Today's post is lettuce appreciation day. The different varieties of lettuce all did well. I can't keep up with eating it. The romaine is bolting. Planting the hydroponic lettuce grows so perfect and no bitterness from a second harvest. Lots of rain lately though. Good for plants bad for mosquitos.
Some visitors today ❤️🦋 Nature is so beautiful. The monarchs caterpillars left the milk weed 2 weeks ago, hoping to spot an adult soon. They love both swamp and regular milk weed. Also have some black admirals but they never land long enough to snap a picture.
Disappointing to find my wine caps shredded like this overnight. Hopefully once it cools down the bugs will chill out. Another hot day so I made lasagne early this morning to beat the heat. Pricey to make - cottage cheese was $8!? Oh well, it's such a comfort food and some days you just need it.
Homegrown radishes and oysters from this morning. Mosquitos are still the worst we have ever witnessed. Got some dunks to help control them and it's not working! Sneak in the house and I got bit in my car today!! It's unreal and others are also noticing the vast amounts. #ontario
Happy Sunday and happy gardens. My snap peas are growing so tall they outgrew the 4 foot trellis, so I improvised with a ladder. Some other beauties from today. Scorching hot weather since Monday and it ended today, good lord it was awful!
Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canucks! Calling for extreme heat today in my area. Whether you spend today lounging on your chesterfield, eating poutine, staying cool in your igloo having a freezie, or watching hockey drinking a cold one. Enjoy the day, stay hydrated, and don't be a hoser, eh...
Evening primrose is exploding, such a happy plant in a world of chaos. Midnight snack cherry tomatoes starting and a nice spiderwort blooming.
Only one baby this clutch and it's ready to fledge any day now. 2 weeks back the nest was hanging by a thread and ready to crash. Steve put 2 boards to secure it and it worked great. My bellflower is showing off, I didn't stake it so it's all over the place. #gardening #robin
Surprised to find these wine caps so early in the season. Found 2 big boys and 1 large stumpy. Left the 3rd guy as it was destroyed by bugs, picked the stumpy as it was getting eaten badly. Tonight's supper is w.c cheesy orzo/kale + g onions from garden, chicken and brussel sprouts. #gardening
Not much luck finding mushrooms lately. Did score a bag full of felt amanitas at a yard sale on Saturday. Will use them as Christmas ornaments. Paid a whopping $1.00 😊
Picked the romaine today - I could have let it get bigger but craving a caesar. Beautiful, fresh, and organic, gotta love that! Made some simple bottles for the plants and seems to be working good. Pop bottle, holes with a wood burner tool. Fill with organics and bury near plants. 1/2
I wasn't sure if this would work out but so far I'm pleased. Old eaves repurposed, the beans seem to like it. It's on my top deck and the black rails will work as a trellis. I used all compost on top and at the bottom I put 1/2 rotten organics to feed them. Bugs are better too. #gardening #organic
Beautiful blue indigo starting up and the bumbles are trying hard to crack the buds open. The mosquitos are so bad this year it's actually nuts! We have never seen it this awful, anyone else experiencing it?
I inoculated this log 3 years ago and today it finally decided to fruit one shiitake. I will submerge it in water for 2 days and hope more will fruit. I will also hit the log with a mallet to shock it - shiitakes like that 😅 #fungifriends
Found today on my milkweed? Kinda early as last season I didn't see the adults till middle of June. My swamp milk weed which they also love is only just starting to grow. Weird. Another huge lettuce for tonight, this one is named butter crunch. #gardening
My kale for the past week has been producing like crazy! I think I'll be tired of it within the next month. Tonight's supper is chicken/bacon fresh sacchettini with fresh basil, oregano, spices, parmesan, and kale. Went with a tomato base with frozen chopped fresh romas that I got a deal on.
Pulled my first lettuce harvest today and just look at the size of it! My first strawberry 🍓 and many more blooms on it. Ice plant and sweet william blooming. Super hot and humid the past few days so I'm sitting inside. #gardening
I think this is a very tiny praying mantis on my strawberries - found today? It's the size of a rottweiler hair and "trust me" I have cleaned more hair from our beloved Lily Rose than I can count. ??
Woo hoo 😋 just look at the size of my romaine lettuce!! I'm going to make a delish caesar salad once mature. From sad little seedlings to Goliath strength. The last picture is of the hydroponic Ontario lettuce from 4 weeks ago. Cut off-eat-trim roots and plant outside - great growth! #happylettuce
What is blooming today in JoJo's garden descriptions in alt text. Warm weather in mid-western Ontario is picking up, plants will be exploding soon! #gardening
I fried up the dryads saddle from yesterday. Decided to make gyros for tonights super. Homemade tzatziki sauce, sweet raw onion, raw thin sliced radish, and fried crispy dryads saddle. Yum yum in my tum tum. #fungifriends
This forest in the Muskoka region in Ontario is by far the nicest one we have visited. Picture taken in 2019 - beautiful streams, lakes, lg rockery, ferns galore, natives everywhere, and mushrooms. Fall oysters chilling on a log overlooking the peaceful stream. Heaven. #nature
Morel season is done in my neck of the woods and it wasn't very good. Too dry and cold than intense heat with no rain. Oh well looking forward to what comes up next. A nice dryads saddle I picked today, perfect size for good eating. #fungifriends
What's blooming and slithering in my garden. An itsy bitsy baby milk snake and a gorgeous flowering of native lady's slippers. #nature #gardening
A very large young cultivated king oyster I grew 7 years ago. This big boy weighed in at 450 grams/1lb upon harvesting time. #fungifriends
Blooms and birds today from my garden. Native columbine, iceland poppy, creeping thyme, and robins nesting in the same spot every season. #gardening
