It depicts Sir Robert alongside his two wives, with the sides of the tomb decorated with images of his children in prayer, which was a common feature of 16th-century English funerary monuments.

Alveley has been a village since 50AD. The current church St Mary's church was built on the site of an earlier Saxon one. Inside the churchyard is the remains of what is thought to be a Saxon preaching cross. Preaching crosses were used as a place for public sermons or announcements. #history

John Mirk of Lilleshall Abbey wrote in the 1300s of the three fires made on St Johns Eve. One of Clean bones, to purify and deter spirits. The second a wakefire, made of wood, the social circle of warmth. the final was of bones and wood, a ritual blaze called St Johns fire. #Folklore #Midsummer

The "butterfly cross" is a type of carving found in many historic buildings. It is thought to be apotropaic in its significance and was often placed on thresholds or doorways. The idea is that the symbol would protect the space from evil. This example was found in Buildwas Abbey. #apotropaic

At St Peter's Church, Diddlebury, there are two carvings on the south wall that have been suggested to be Sheela Na Gigs. Their status as Sheela Na Gigs has been heavily debated due to how worn the carvings are. It is intetesting to consider the possibility. #medieval #churches #churchcrawling
