When designing greebles for the space station, we wanted to ensure they had a reason for being there. We decided that there were five reasons for a greeble to exist: - Power - Data and Communication - Structural Reinforcement - Maintenance Access - Thermal Management #indieDev #GameDev #Space

Surface Greebles

Greebles should suggest that they perform a job to justify why they appear on the modules, but they should be designed in a manner so that they are not confused as being puzzle elements.

Make them contrast less with the rest of the module than the interactable assets do
Use simplified forms that do not have complex geometry
Lean towards shorter/flatter designs so that they don't stick out from the surface as puzzle assets do
Materials should blend them in with their surroundings
Size can vary as we would like simple ways to individualize hulls but be sure to inversely balance size with complexity

What jobs can they look like:
Provide power
Cable bundles/conduits
Junction boxes
Data and communication
antenna dish

Structural reinforcement (chunky, repetitive/symmetrical, load bearing)
Frame braces and ribs
Bolted plates
Maintenance access (hints at human scale involvement)
Handles for spacewalking astronauts
Service hatches
Warning labels (decal, actually)
Thermal management
Heat vents
Insulation tiles
Heat radiators
