On the "Controlled excess", I'd say that it's only for the US cars... in Europe and Japan, everything was geared towards "It has to be cheap to produce, cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to fix". For example, look at the FIAT 500C "Topolino" (1950), the Renault 4CV or the BMW/Iso Isetta (1953).
On this, I'm sad to say, you need corrections. This is heavily reliant on Ford's playbook and completely forgets how Chevy and GM style worked. Also, until model year 1953 you'd have seen the same styling as 1940 since new car production was halted to supply for the war, cars resumed only in '49.
