You joke but

He lived right on the edge, where city decayed into swampland. Beyond that the Norfolk archipelagos, just visible from his window when there wasn’t a haze of yellow, smoggy air between him and them. His flat was little more than a niche in the wall. All his furniture folded down, from his bed to sofa. The mechanisms broke often, but he was good at fixing them. It breached his rental agreement, but his landlord was a a particularly poorly coded AI that he’d bypassed the third day of living here. The rent was hard-coded in somewhere with much better security, or he’d have bypassed that, too. It was a place to sleep, to shower when it was his building’s turn with the hot water ration and strip wash when it wasn’t, and to occasionally bring home big stupid men who never fucked him as well as he wanted.

For Pride Month 1 (In the UK Pride Month is July, I will be celebrating this as Pride Month 2) please enjoy perhaps one of the gayest things I have ever written in my life, which is really saying something.

Rest allowed, Jamys stripped off his ever present dandified coat and let it fall, crumpled moss green. His shirt under it was loose, damp with sweat under the arms and in the small of his back, where a lover might touch. He was a strangely shaped man, lean but rough, not elegant nor delicate. He had the body and bones of someone who was supposed to be bigger, broader, but hadn't been fed well enough young enough to achieve it. Long limbs, short ribcage. Under the shirt a firm hand could probably count the bumps of his spine.
Jamys sat next to him, so close Barret could see the individual fine hairs on his cheek, the beautiful curve of his lashes. They were so long, so thick, and it turned out tipped in a dark gold almost the exact shade of his sun-bleached hair. It looked as if someone had dusted them in pollen.
Barret's eyes, without his permission, followed Jamys as he lay back in the grass, arms thrown above him in the sun. His shirt pulled loose from his trews, revealing a stomach flat and firm, two shades paler than his face, and graced with a shockingly thick trail of brown hair from his bellybutton, drawing the eye down.
Did it get even thicker? Spread out? Were his thighs as thickly furred? Was it soft or coarse?
Jamys let out a low and languid hum, and stretched, arched, simple animal pleasure in heat and rest. Barret went hot, a heat nothing to do with the weather, a fierce white heat starting from his gut and spreading outwards. Jamys' thigh was so close to Barret's hand that his fingers tingled with imagined contact. He could already feel the solid muscle and soft fat denting under his grip. Running fingernails through hair, hearing that hum again, but breaking this time into a groan, a moan. Himself, between Jamys' thighs, getting these sounds and movements out of him with hands and teeth and cock.

Jamys knocked a knee against Barret's thigh and propped up on one elbow, reaching for the skin. The light touched him like it loved him, and Barret no longer doubted that Jamys could get the attention of any woman he wanted. Maybe he wasn't pretty, or even handsome, but there was something about him that made it almost impossible to look away, and those eyes. Those eyes. They promised things.
Their hands touched when Barret handed over the skin. He felt it like a bite. It hurt him.
It hurt him too, to see Jamys swallow water down, and not be able to see his throat move under the constant neckerchief. He wanted to strip it off, strip everything off, reveal every secret of Jamys' body, see all the ways it moved and flexed. The soft unexpected twitches and deliberate movements.
He tipped the rest over his head, wetting his ripe rye hair, water trickling down his cheekbones and long narrow jaw.

Maybe it was the flickering flames that made him look hateful and angry. Because it was gone as soon as Barret noticed it, and then he was giving in, all good humour and amusement.
"Let me... a moment. It's in my own language, in my head."
Sourly, Barret wondered, not for the first time, how a self-professed peasant boy from some nameless farming village spoke two languages and so well.
Jamys took a breath, and began.
"A long time ago — so very long ago that even the bones are dust now — there was a village. Not so unlike any other. The people did well enough, and their struggles were the ones anyone can expect any day. One day, however, a... " he paused for a second. "The word is monorrure. You would say abomination. An abomination came to town. It was larger than a hut and had a mouth full of sharp, sharp teeth. The people were afraid. They sent the closest thing to a fighter out to meet it, and it killed him instantly and ate every part of him. It spoke then, in a voice all could hear.

And he smiled too much. Too easily, too readily. Barret didn’t trust it. Men who smiled so much were either fools or liars, and he didn’t think this man a fool, even on first encounter. No fool would look at the world like that, like he wanted to find the easiest place to cut it open.
Barret was staring openly now, and Jamys caught it. Jamys met his stare, and Barret recoiled. Jamys winked.
