Genome Damage and Stability Centre (GDSC)
@gdsc-sussex
The GDSC is a University of Sussex ‘Centre of Excellence’ which brings together world-leading experts and innovative approaches to create a critical mass of knowledge, skills and training, to prove that a ‘challenge is only impossible until it is done’
NEW PAPER: Human PIF1 clears secondary DNA structures by coupled DNA unwinding and rewinding activities — with contributions from Jessica Hudson and Ulrich Rass at the GDSC. genesdev.cshlp.org/content/earl...
Whether you’re planning to study biology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology or another STEM subject, you could find a place at Sussex. www.sussex.ac.uk/clearing/ hotline: 01273 007817
Great to see so much support from the crowd whilst on the Brighton Pride parade [march] this year! #sussexuni #sussex #gdscsussex

This week, we were pleased to welcome Ilirjana Bajrami from @crick.ac.uk to our seminar progamme. Ilirjana gave a fantastic talk on the effects of PARP inhibitors at centromeric DNA, and is pictured here (left) with Keith Caldecott (right) as host. @westlabcrick.bsky.social
We were delighted to welcome Dr. Greg Ngo (left) to our seminar programme this week (hosted by Dr. Chris Chan, right). Greg gave a fascinating talk titled 'R-loops and mutations at DNA double-strand breaks' — good or bad? profiles.cardiff.ac.uk/staff/ngog #GDSC #DNARepair @gregngo.bsky.social
The Academy of Medical Sciences Professorship Scheme is now open, Evi Soutoglou + Ulrich Rass were previous recipients and confirm that it made a real difference to their scientific research. The scheme offers up to £0.5M in funding for researchers moving to the UK to take up a full professorship.

'Huge' congratulations to Dr Luke Yates, on being awarded a highly competitive Academy of Medical Sciences' Springboard programme — for research investigating how cells coordinate the process of DNA repair, using advanced molecular imaging and genetic tools @acmedsci.bsky.social
Latest paper from the GDSC: Jones, Appanah et al., show how a phospho-activated module in Pol32 boosts break-induced replication and helps maintain genome stability. 👉Article in Press: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Sussex is the host for this year's South West Structural Biology Consortium meeting [we snuck in... !]. Looking forward to hearing talks from Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Portsmouth, Southampton and of course, Sussex!
Prof. Evi Soutoglou describing what happens when DNA breaks, and when to cut, and when not to — on Brighton seafront, as part of Soapbox Science 2025 — a public outreach platform that promote women and non-binary scientists and the science that they carry out. @soapboxscience.bsky.social
Many congratulations to Dr. Will Foster on succesfully defending his PhD thesis on Greatwall Kinase (GWL); co-supervissed by Tony Oliver and Helfrid Hochegger.
