During a prolonged hot, dry spell, a wildfire breaks out nearby. Smoke is visible from the school. A pupil with asthma starts coughing after PE. Another pupil says their family may need to leave home if the wind changes. A pupil with sensory needs becomes distressed by the smell and uncertainty.
🌿 Part 2 of GroundEd is here! Practice, pupil agency, climate action, future schools, burnout, resilience, Meryl’s Big Green Hug — and Emily Lawler to play us out. 🎧 soundcloud.com/geogr... #CoffeeGeogPod #RegenerativeEducation #TeacherCPD #ClimateEducation #ClimateAction
After a storm some roads are blocked, local buses are unreliable, a community centre is closed, several families have lost freezer contents due to power cuts. Attendance is patchy. A young carer arrives late and exhausted. A pupil with a social worker is absent. Whats your #safeguarding response?
A group of pupils have been sharing videos claiming that climate collapse is inevitable and that school is pointless. Another group are sharing content saying climate change is a hoax. A usually engaged pupil says there is “no future anyway” and stops completing work. #safeguarding #KCSIE2026
A Year 9 pupil tells a form tutor they feel guilty every time they use electricity or eat meat. They say adults have “ruined everything” and it is now up to young people to fix it. They have stopped attending eco-club because it “makes everything worse” and a parent says they are not sleeping well.
During a period of drought & water restrictions, a school has intermittent water supply issues. Some toilets are closed for part of the day. Pupils told “go at break” and bring extra water. A pupil begins avoiding drinking so they do not need the toilet. Another pupil who menstruates asks to go home
A pupil who is usually punctual misses three days after local flooding, then arrives late wearing damp shoes and without PE kit. They become upset when asked about homework. A parent has not replied to messages.
It's the 3rd day of a heat-health alert. Several classrooms are uncomfortably hot. A pupil with asthma is flushed, irritable. Another feels sick. Senior leaders consider early closure, but some live in overcrowded flats, temporary accommodation, or homes with no adult present during the afternoon.
Busy day - parenting, housekeeping, and an afternoon hyperfocusing on an article about #KCSIE2026 and #ClimateChange as a #Safeguarding issue. Not quite done - want to make sure it's something useful that can be used by school leaders and DSLs come the new academic year. Hopefully out tomorrow.
I really hope this isn’t a premonition!!! 😜 #SentenceGame #ENGMEX #WorldCup #JudeBellingham
Ironically, headteacher Alun learnt nothing by having me on TTR with him just a few days before his platforming by the BBC. You can't teach resilience by increasing vulnerability. #UKHeatwave #SchoolClosures #Heat #Safeguarding #Resilience #CoffeeGeogPod Article- geogramblings.com/2026/06/29/w...
Alistair and I react to a headteacher's comment on Teacher's Talk Radio saying we coped in 1976, so we should just get on with it. But anecdote is not risk assessment, nor is it a safeguarding standard. Check out our analysis on #heatwaves, #schoolclosures and #safeguarding here: lnkd.in/eZWitf2s
